A man threatened his brother’s teenage ex-girlfriend after she went to the police to report an assault. Blackburn magistrates heard Ryan Hancock sent the girl threatening and abusive messages over Snapchat following his brother’s arrest. He told the probation officer preparing a pre-sentence report he felt “parental” responsibility for his younger brother, but District Judge Alexandra Preston told Hancock his comments were misdirected. “You should have been addressing your brother’s behaviour with him rather than threatening his victim,” said District Judge Preston. Hancock, 22, of Pink Street, Burnley, pleaded guilty to sending a menacing message and making threats to damage property. He was sentenced to 42 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, with 20 days’ rehabilitation activity requirement. He was made subject to a restraining order for two years, which prohibits any contact with the victim, and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £187 victim surcharge.
