When Matt McLain was coming back from a calf injury in July, the initial plan was for him to go on a rehab assignment that would at least go through the rest of the month. Terry Francona said on July 27, “Get him through the weekend (Aug. 2), and then he’s at the manager’s discretion, which means you can turn him loose. We want him to play a little bit because I think it can be good for him.” The plan looked like it changed over the course of that week. The Reds optioned a struggling Edwin Arroyo on July 30 and activated McLain from the IL. “We obviously missed (McLain’s) defense,” Francona said when the Reds activated McLain last week. “We all want him to hit better, himself included. We don’t want him to try to get it all back in one game. Play the game. Be scrappy.” On Wednesday, in a 3-2 win for the Reds over the Athletics, a solo home run for McLain was the difference in the game. The San Diego Padres’ surge before the trade deadline was enough to persuade general manager A.J. Preller to take yet another couple of huge swings at a postseason push. The Padres acquired left-hander Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants and right-hander Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers on Monday, giving up three of their highest-rated prospects in deadline trades for two proven starting pitchers. “We’re trying to win,” Preller said. “We don’t apologize for it. We’re trying to win championships. We’re trying to get to the postseason, and do it year after year.” San Diego sent right-hander Miguel Mendez and 17-year-old shortstop Joniel Hernandez to San Francisco, which will pay part of Ray’s $25 million salary. College coaches have spent the month of July securing college commitments from '27s in an effort to prepare for the Aug. 1 deadline, when they can begin communicating with '28s. As a result, we have highlighted 30 college commitments for '27 prospects in the last two weeks. Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) has the most '27 commits of any high school or prep program in New England with six. Belmont Hill (Mass.), Trinity High (N.H.), Winchendon (Mass.), and Canterbury School (Conn.) have four each. North East Baseball (NEB) has the most commits of any travel ball team with 13. GBG Northeast and MVP New England have seven commits each. Baseball U CT, Boston Prime, and Clubhouse Evoshield have six each. Five years after he last threw a pitch in the major leagues, former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and 10-year veteran Trevor Bauer continues to blame others for his inability to find a roster spot within an organization. In an interview ​this week on the YouTube channel “La casa de los Dodgers,” Bauer expressed regret ‌over signing a three-year, $102-million deal with his hometown club. The 35-year-old right-hander currently is pitching for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in Mexico City. “I wish I had never played for them,” Bauer said in the interview. .”..
