Jeff Hoffman’s bond with Phillies endures: He’ll always have a piece of Philly — literally

TORONTO — This is Jeff Hoffman’s home now, the result of a $33 million deal he scored after resurrecting his career as a late-inning revelation with the Phillies. He golfed with some of his former teammates Monday afternoon before they all took their wives to a sushi dinner. The Phillies miss Hoffman, and he misses them, too. That’s how it works. So, as he strolled into the luxurious Blue Jays’ clubhouse Tuesday afternoon before facing the Phillies, he laughed. There it was — a ragged, green Philadelphia street sign. HOFFMAN AVE. It had hung for months in a hallway adjacent to the Phillies’ clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park. It was still there last weekend, long after Hoffman had departed via free agency. No one from the Phillies said a word about the street sign during their daylong reunion with Hoffman. He assumed it was gone. “It was in my locker this morning,” Hoffman said. He grinned. “I don’t know.” Hoffman has said he’ll always carry a piece of Philadelphia with him — he holds no grudges for the Phillies never coming close to the various contract offers he received last offseason — but he meant that figuratively.  » Read More

Plans for clubhouse at Eastbourne Sports Complex, Darlington | The Northern Echo

Plans have been submitted by the council to install a new clubhouse at a Darlington sports complex. Darlington Borough Council has proposed the installation of the clubhouse and a catering unit at the venue. The new facilities will be next to the existing changing facilities at Eastbourne Sports Complex, Bourne Avenue. A catering unit will offer a takeaway service with an optional café area and accessible open space and will be connected to the existing water, electricity, and waste systems. The new clubhouse is also expected to rely on existing toilets, which are within 30 metres of the planned site. No changes are planned for the existing 122 car parking spaces, and no new or altered vehicle or pedestrian access has been proposed. It comes after a new 3G pitch, changing rooms, spectator stand, and a refurbishment of existing athletics track facilities were all given the go-ahead and installed in 2023. Waste from the catering unit will be managed by Eastbourne Community Stadium, with existing Euro-style bins in place for food and recyclable waste.  » Read More

Justin Rose Is 15 Years Removed From His First PGA Tour Win And Still Going Strong

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Justin Rose has reason to feel his age at the Memorial when he sees his framed photo on the wall of his first PGA Tour victory. That was 15 years ago. “It’s quite amazing when I think about it like that,” he said. “Fifteen years. The image I have is my little son Leo was kind of messing around in a bunker behind 18.” Rose turns 45 next month, and the number that should impress him is being No. 19 in the world ranking. He has had a few wobbles over the years but is fully entrenched in the top 50, eligible for all the majors for the 15th consecutive year. “I think I’m getting to a stage in my career where that is the goal now, sort of having pride of performance and trying to buck the trend of what is a natural aging process,” he said. “There are things that get more difficult, but yeah, you don’t want to kind of believe it. I still think my good (golf) is good,  » Read More

Tiger Woods’ Son Is In The Spotlight For A Big Win. Jack Nicklaus Says A Tough Road Lies Ahead

Golf is hard enough without having a famous father who set a standard hard to match even by the very best. Tiger Woods is certain to watch that unfold over the next several years. Jack Nicklaus already has seen it. A few hours before Scottie Scheffler set out to win the Memorial for the second straight year, Nicklaus was asked about another big win that week. Charlie Woods, the 16-year-old son of the biggest name in golf, won his first American Junior Golf Association title. It’s a wonder which win — Scheffler or Woods — got more attention on social media. “I think it’s tough on kids,” Nicklaus said, speaking from experience. His oldest son, Jackie, won the prestigious North & South Amateur at Pinehurst and played his college golf at North Carolina. That was nothing compared with his third-oldest son. Long before Gary Nicklaus became the only one of the four golden cubs to earn a PGA Tour card, he made the cover of Sports Illustrated.  » Read More

The Making of Henry Pollock – Yahoo Sports

By James Toney You’d be forgiven for thinking Henry Pollock was born in Bundaberg rather than Banbury, because in many ways he is a prodigious, swashbuckling talent straight from Aussie central casting. Swaggering confidence and an unstinting self-belief beyond his years combine with a natural flair for getting under the skin of his opponents. Advertisement He even has the makings of a very strong mullet and is every bit the viral baller – the sort you love to play for you but hate to play against. Think David Campese, but with muscles. Pollock’s journey from schoolboy rugby to becoming the youngest forward to play for the British & Irish Lions since 1968 may seem meteoric – he’s played barely 40 games at senior level – but it comes as no surprise to him or anyone who knows him. “It’s been mad, the last year’s just come so fast,” he said. “It’s been crazy and I’m just trying to enjoy every moment of it,  » Read More

Amari Avery Has To Borrow A Friend’s Clubs And Still Manages To Make Cut In The U.S. …

ERIN, Wis. (AP) — Amari Avery had to borrow a friend’s clubs for one of the biggest rounds of her life and still found a way to make the cut in the U.S. Women’s Open. That was just part of an eventful weekend that also included an attempted break-in at the place where she was initially staying. “To say it was wild is putting it pretty nice,” Avery quipped after completing her third round Saturday at Erin Hills. Avery’s frantic Friday began at about 2 a.m. when she said her family had to notify the police about a suspicious person at the place in Milwaukee where they were sleeping. “My boyfriend, my mom, and my dad saw the person outside the door, so it was a little bit scary,” Avery said. “We just kind of stayed back away from the front door, and we were just kind of hoping it would solve itself. It was nice that the guy ended up leaving and the police came and made us feel more safe.” They then packed up their things while Avery’s boyfriend,  » Read More

Scottie Scheffler Has Flawless Card And Surges Into Lead At The Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Scottie Scheffler felt he was hitting all the right shots and only had 13 straight pars to show for it Saturday on a tough day at the Memorial. As usual, he had a powerful finishing kick, and the world’s No. 1 player wound up in a familiar spot. Scheffler, six shots behind when he made the turn, had four birdies over the last five holes for a 4-under 68 at Muirfield Village, giving him a one-shot lead when Ben Griffin missed a 3-foot par putt on the final hole. “I don’t know what the scoring average was today, but I was definitely proud of the way I finished and it was really challenging,” Scheffler said. “Through 13 holes, I felt like I was playing really good and I was only even par. Just a hard course.” And it became a hard task for everyone chasing him. Scheffler has won the last eight times when he had the 54-hole lead, including two weeks ago at the PGA Championship. He goes after his third win in his last four starts.  » Read More
