BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Angel Cabrera sensed his opportunity when Padraig Harrington — playing a few groups ahead — faltered on the 15th hole with a double bogey. “I was like, ‘This is my turn,’” Cabrera said through a translator. While Harrington was erratic down the stretch, Cabrera was steady, shooting a 3-under 69 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory in the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional. It was his second senior major in a week. Cabrera, the 2007 U.S. Open and 2009 Masters champion, won the rain-delayed Regions Tradition on Monday in Alabama, which was the Argentine’s first senior major. Six days later at Congressional, he trailed Harrington by two strokes after Harrington rolled in a long birdie putt on No. 14. But Harrington double bogeyed No. 15, and Cabrera birdied that same hole a short while later to take the lead. After a bogey by Harrington on the par-4 18th, Cabrera needed only a bogey on that hole and got it. “I feel very emotional,” Cabrera said. » Read More

Bae didn’t make another birdies after the third hole. What held her back were having to settle for pars on easy scoring holes, and then closing with a bogey when it took her two shots to get out of the crushed coral left of the green on the par-5 18th. Bae was at 7-under 209, and the LPGA rookie faces a big test Sunday — along with just about everyone else chasing her — in a bid for her first LPGA victory. “I didn’t finish as well as I wanted to, but that’s OK,” Bae said. “Just tells me that I need to fight more the last 18 holes.” The El Camaleon course at Mayakoba was set up for scoring, with the tees moved up on the par-4 17th to make it reachable with a fairway metal, » Read More

Exactly as fast as some of the drivers will be going in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. “It would be really cool,” DeChambeau mused Saturday, sitting on a perch that overlooks the front stretch at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, “to hit a ball down the straightaway, see if you could land it in a car going by you.” Sounds like an interesting challenge. Then again, DeChambeau is all about the challenges these days. Sure, the majority of golf fans know of his highly publicized exodus to the LIV tour and his tremendous success in the majors, including the U.S. Open, where he will be the defending champion at Oakmont in a few weeks. But millions of mainstream sports fans, especially in younger demographics, know him just as well — perhaps even better — from his YouTube channel, which boasts nearly 2 million followers. » Read More

Griffin shot a 7-under 63 in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial on Friday and was tied with Matti Schmid for the second-round lead at 11 under, two strokes ahead of first-round leader John Pak and five ahead of Fowler, who made the turn in 29 before settling for a 64. Pak, the tour rookie who opened with a 63, birdied the par-4 18th for a 68 and was a shot ahead of Chris Gotterup, a one-time tour winner like Griffin. Gotterup was 8 under after a 65. Ryo Hisatsune, a 22-year-old from Japan, was another stroke back after a 67, tied with Akshay Bhatia (66). Scottie Scheffler, who won the PGA Championship last weekend, shot 71 and was 10 shots off the lead as the world No. 1 tries to become the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win three consecutive starts. » Read More

Back at the course where he won the U.S. Open in 1997, Els shot a 3-under 69 on Thursday to finish two strokes off the lead after the first round of the Senior PGA Championship. Els is one of a trio of South Africans near the top, along with Keith Horne and Darren Fichardt. Cameron Percy of Australia shot 67 to take sole possession of the lead, one stroke ahead of Horne. Fichardt and Els were tied for third, along with Simon Khan and Mario Tiziani. It’s the second straight major for the seniors after Angel Cabrera’s victory Monday in the delayed Regions Tradition. “This one feels more like a major,” Els said. “Last week they called it a major, but it’s just a nice big Champions Tour event. But this one has got more of that feel. It’s got a golf course with history, and it’s got some prestige here.” Players dealt with wet conditions on a rainy day, » Read More

Kessler, 39, is the 10th commissioner in LPGA history, replacing Mollie Marcoux Samaan, who stepped away after three-and-a-half years in January. He formally takes over on July 15. “I don’t think this is one of those opportunities where we start with 100 days of listening. It’s time to explode out of the gates,” Kessler said. He said the main goal could be to create a culture where anyone looking at the LPGA would say, “I have to be part of that.” Kessler, a Georgetown graduate with an MBA from Harvard Business School, had been with the PGA of America for just over two years and was a candidate to become the CEO until the organization wanted a golf professional in the role and hired Derek Sprague. “We set out to find a transformational leader with a deep appreciation for the LPGA’s legacy and a clear vision of what’s possible for our future,” said John Veihmeyer, » Read More

The world No. 1 doesn’t want an emphasis on rest and recovery to be misunderstood. “I didn’t just show up here to Fort Worth to just walk around and celebrate last week,” Scheffler said Wednesday. “I’m here for a reason, and that’s not to just play a couple of ceremonious rounds and then ride off in the sunset. I’m here for a reason. That’s to compete.” Scheffler’s third major also set him up to be the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win three consecutive PGA Tour starts. He won his hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson north of Dallas two weeks before the PGA, then skipped the $20 million signature event at the Truist Championship before winning at Quail Hollow. Colonial isn’t quite on the level of the Nelson for Scheffler, who attended that event for years as a kid and made his pro debut there 11 years ago. » Read More

BOSTON — Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler was ejected in the third inning against the New York Mets on Tuesday night and manager Alex Cora followed him to the clubhouse after heated arguments with umpire Mike Estabrook. Buehler and Estabrook exchanged words after Francisco Lindor, who was hit by a pitch, stole second on a pitch Estabrook called a ball, pushing the count on Juan Soto to 2-0. The right-hander's response drew Estabrook from behind the plate, where he took off his mask and held up his hand and indicated Buehler had said enough. Buehler continued and quickly got tossed. “I’m not going to talk about what he did or didn’t do. I don’t think it’s my place,” Buehler said after the game, which the Red Sox won 2-0 after six relievers combined to complete the shutout. “For me, it kind of spiraled a little bit and I said some things that he thought I shouldn’t have said and whatnot. » Read More
