Gisselle Hernandez Internet Culture Posted on Jul 19, 2022 Updated on Jul 19, 2022, 8:38 am CDT Former GoPro employee Alexis Barreyat may have founded the BeReal app in 2020, but its recent popularity among Gen Z has propelled the app into meme stardom this week. The app, which markets itself as a sort of antithesis to the picture-perfect Instagram aesthetic, allows users to share a photo once a day to their friends sans editing, scheduling, and filtering. Even more restrictive, users only have two minutes to post a photo, which includes both a snapshot using their front camera and back camera simultaneously. The images are then uploaded to a feed where friends—or the explore page, if public—can judge a poster and their “realness.” BeReal gained buzz early in the year, with outlets like BuzzFeed and NPR covering the beloved Gen Z app. Currently, the app has been installed more than 7 million times, with downloads increasing about 315% since the beginning of this year. » Read More

Law enforcement across New England was put on high alert Saturday when the Massachusetts State Police issued a warning to area police agencies about a fundraiser by the Pagan outlaw motorcycle club. The weekend gathering by the Pagans is of concern because they are in conflict with the famed Hells Angels, and violence has erupted between the two clubs in recent months. Target 12 has learned a shooting in Pawtucket may be connected to the warring factions. A massive police response descended on Lafayette Street in Pawtucket after one person was shot in the face on Saturday night. According to Pawtucket Police, a Pagan MC member was shot while standing outside of the clubhouse at around 10 p.m. Saturday night. Lowry finished with a birdie at the closing hole to sign for a 69, but it is a far way back with some big names to overtake. England’s Tommy Fleetwood set the early clubhouse target on a day of low scoring in the 150th Open Championship. Fleetwood, who was runner-up to Lowry in 2019, carded seven birdies and one bogey in a third round of 66 to reach nine under par on the Old Course. Australian’s Cameron Smith began the day with a two-shot lead after posting a record halfway total for an Open at St Andrews of 13 under par, » Read More

For example, it wasn’t until 2001 that Amazon began posting a profit, seven years after it launched and four years after the IPO. That is perhaps why Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson — a former employee of the ecommerce giant and avid fan of Jeff Bezos — is so bullish on his company’s future. “On the business side, we are performing very well,” he told Protocol. But “now the environment is clearly rewarding profitability.” Twilio is one of a handful of established IT vendors that are stuck in the enterprise doldrums. Not yet profitable, but working towards it, the company posted 48% year-over-year revenue growth last quarter. Many analysts remain bullish on the opportunity ahead, given Twilio’s prevalence among developers and expansion into first-party data. Still, its stock is down 69% this year. That’s not only bad news for investors. Employees who have their compensation tied to Twilio’s share performance might also be feeling a little grumpy. But Lawson remains hesitant to pursue any option that could further dilute Twilio’s stock or put the company in a position where it is constantly reacting to Wall Street’s wild fluctuations. » Read More
