The Toronto Blue Jays, Who Are Currently in a Playoff Spot, Have Fired Manager Charlie Montoyo

At 46-42, I think you could characterize the Toronto Blue Jays as a “disappointment” so far this season. The AL East is absurdly competitive, which is a factor, but when you’ve got as much young talent as the Blue Jays do, and when you’ve made a number of significant financial commitments to boost the roster, there are certain expectations. That said, the Blue Jays ARE in a playoff spot right now (the final Wild Card spot), so this is pretty darn wild: Charlie Montoyo has been fired as manager of the Blue Jays, sources tell @TheAthletic.— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 13, 2022 I suppose the front office is looking for some kind of midseason kick, but it’s not like the Blue Jays have any real chance of coming back in the East (15.5 games behind the Yankees). So I guess this is about holding onto a Wild Card spot? And/or maybe there were existing issues there with Montoyo? Just not something you see too often on a competitive team in mid-July.  » Read More

Column: Ken Williams talk another bad Chicago White Sox moment

The man who fired Tony La Russa was in the Chicago White Sox clubhouse Sunday morning, two days after the man who could fire La Russa also made a cameo appearance. But any resemblance between the clubhouse visits of Ken “Hawk” Harrelson and Ken Williams was purely coincidental.Harrelson, who memorably fired La Russa in the summer of 1986 during Hawk’s one-year reign as general manager, was in town in his role as team ambassador. He stopped by the clubhouse Sunday morning to chat with old friends, including La Russa.Williams, the former Sox GM who was promoted to executive vice-president in 2012, made a trip to the clubhouse to address the team about its underachieving season. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, who reported the news, tweeted that “no one was absolved, from staff to players, for the team’s woes.”Chicago #WhiteSox president Ken Williams addressed the players and staff on Friday about their underachieving performance this season, reminding them of their talent, but that it was time to focus and pull together.  » Read More

Luis Arraez, artist: 5 at-bats that define Twins' first-time All-Star – The Athletic

Twins teammates and coaches often talk about Luis Arraez’s plate appearances as if they’re works of art, reveling in their beauty and recalling little details that make them unforgettable. Arraez has had no shortage of big, game-changing moments. Three weeks ago, he ripped a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning against Cleveland. Two weeks before that, he sparked a comeback victory with a third-inning grand slam against Tampa Bay. And that’s just last month. Those were highlight-reel homers and they’re part of why Arraez has been one of MLB’s best players this year, leading the AL with a .348 batting average and .420 on-base percentage while cracking the top 10 in OPS, but many times it’s been smaller-scale plate appearances that get everyone in the Twins clubhouse really buzzing. “Think about all the great hitters we’ve all seen,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “You remember games. You remember a swing. That happens all the time. But rarely do you remember an entire at-bat,  » Read More

Tiger moments at St. Andrews about more than claret jugs – KRMG

The greatest feat of Tiger Woods at St. Andrews was never captured on television. There was nothing extraordinary about his victory in the 2005 British Open. It was the second claret jug Woods won on the Old Course, cementing an affection so deep for St. Andrews that he was never going to miss it this year as long as he could walk.Woods never trailed over the final 63 holes. He led by as many as six shots in the final round and won by five. Still, he knew right away that Sunday was going to be special based on the practice range.Starting his warm-up of full swings with a wedge, his first shot hit the wooden 100-yard sign. And then he did it again.
