THE PLAYERS unveils new exhibit to honor African American golfers | firstcoastnews.com

The exhibit features past Players champions, such as Calvin Peete, and will be on display through February. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — TPC Sawgrass clubhouse features a painting of Jack Nicklaus stroking a putt and Jerry Pate jumping into the water behind 18. Beyond the glistening eyes of visitors is a brand new exhibit honoring African American golfers who've made an impact on the game. "Having this here is great for the public to go through and kind of make that connective point between our community and our tournament," THE PLAYERS Executive Director Jared Rice said.  From Tiger Woods to former Jacksonville resident Calvin Peete and the Brentwood Four, a new timeline of history has been added.  Frank Hampton, Edward Norman, Charles Brown and Davoye Brown were four black Jacksonville residents who sued the city for equal access of city golf courses. "The Brentwood Four fighting for access of that facility led to desegregation of public golf courses in the United States, and that happened here," Rice said.  » Read More

Dodgers: Dave Roberts Struggling with Communication Blackout

Whether or not Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is a good manager is hotly debated topic amongst Dodgers fans. One thing that can’t be debated is Roberts’ ability to connect with his players. His rapport with is players is a key piece of the Dodgers incredible clubhouse chemistry.Due to the current MLB lockout, Roberts is unable to communicate with any of the Dodgers MLB players. Roberts discussed the challenges of the current situation in an interview on SportsNet LA last week.“It’s been different, certainly with the lockout. This is a time where I really connect with the players and try to get the vibe of how things are going, talk to them about Spring Training and how their offseason is going. Right now we can’t talk to the players, so that’s been different. Connected with the coaches and front office guys, so I’m certainly getting antsy.”Roberts would surely like to be able to check-in with his players, especially those recovering from serious injuries. That includes All-Star first baseman Max Muncy,  » Read More

BenFred: MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is a problem in the clubhouse – St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A player's productive postseason experience matters when he joins a World Series contender before the trade deadline.A pitcher snapping a skid with a dominant performance that sparks a winning streak means more than a number in the win column.Even the most advanced metrics in a value-obsessed sport can't quantify a clubhouse presence. When it comes to team morale, guys are either one of two things. A minus, or a plus. Here’s something Major League Baseball owners should take a moment to consider when they gather this week for their meetings in Orlando, Florida. What is commissioner Rob Manfred's score with players, and how is it hurting negotiations, or lack thereof, during this ongoing labor dispute?“He (Manfred) has galvanized us in ways he can’t imagine,” an anonymous MLB player said to Forbes. “He underestimates how unified we are in this moment.”Other players are more than happy to put their name on their criticism. “Manclown and his boys need to figure it out and stop ruining the game of baseball,” Cubs starter Marcus Stroman tweeted.  » Read More

Children and social media traps – The Hindu

Crafty algorithms leave youngsters addicted to these platforms and susceptible to online bullying and abuse Reading the newspaper one recent morning, I was struck by a headline: “Meta sued over 11-year-old’s suicide”. The report from the U.S. left me feeling sorry for the child’s mother, who has chosen to call out the “culprits” who caused her little ones’ death. She alleged that her daughter suffered from depression and sleep deprivation due to severe addiction to Instagram and Snapchat. The report reminded me of a similar case in the U.K. where a man partly blamed Instagram for his 14-year-old son’s suicide. It sent shivers down my spine as I recalled a similar case of alleged suicide by a teenager whose family I know personally. She was probably upset over her Instagram photos and for being reprimanded for them. It’s indeed scary that our children like to spend more time on these social media platforms than with us parents. Being a mother of a 13-year-old girl, I instantly slipped into deep introspection. She recently introduced me to a word called “ghosting” — friends suddenly choosing to disappear from your life.  » Read More
