The creator of one of the earliest and most enduringly iconic virtual worlds is returning to his roots. Second Life’s founder Philip Rosedale will rejoin the company he founded in 1999 as a strategic advisor after High Fidelity, the spatial audio company Rosedale co-founded in 2013, invested in Second Life’s developer Linden Lab. The deal includes an unspecified cash investment, relevant patents and some members of its development team. “No one has come close to building a virtual world like Second Life,” Rosedale said in a press release. “Big Tech giving away VR headsets and building a metaverse on their ad-driven, behavior-modification platforms isn’t going to create a magical, single digital utopia for everyone. Second Life has managed to create both a positive, enriching experience for its residents — with room for millions more to join — and built a thriving subscription-based business at the same time. Virtual worlds don’t need to be dystopias.” As companies like Meta launch their own visions for the metaverse, Rosedale has remained a vocal critic of some of the dynamics that underpin the current era of online life,  » Read More

Albert Pujols is one of the “good guys” in baseball. The Dodgers acquired Pujols last season and, not surprisingly, he instantly became a clubhouse leader. Tio Albert quickly developed great relationships with his new teammates. He was also happy to be reunited with an old friend from his Angels days – Dino Ebel.Ebel would routinely drive down to the Newport Beach, where Pujols lives, to help him train.“When he would call, I would show up. Wherever he wanted me to be, I was there. If it was hitting ground balls, or throwing batting practice for an hour, I would do it because I love doing it. I love him because he’s a great person. Our relationship is strong and it continues to be strong.”Pujols wanted to repay Ebel for all of his hard work in helping the three-time NL MVP stay sharp.Ebel pulled up to his house around midnight after a Dodgers home game this past season. His wife and two kids were outside to alert him that the garage door wasn’t working.  » Read More

In the clubhouse? She hasn't seen any of that toxicity there. Balkovec was introduced Wednesday as manager of the New York Yankees' Low A affiliate in the Florida State League. In taking over the Tampa Tarpons, Balkovec will become the first female manager in the history of affiliated baseball, an appointment 10 years in the making for the former college softball player. "If you know my story and you have a pulse, I think it's pretty hard not to get behind what's going on here," she said. Nearly a decade after changing her name on resumes to disguise her gender and break into baseball, the 34-year-old has smashed several barriers en route to this title. She was the first woman to serve as a full-time minor league strength and conditioning coach, then the first to be a full-time hitting coach in the minors. This promotion - a year after former Yankees employee Kim Ng became the majors' first female general manager with the Miami Marlins - is different. Balkovec will run the clubhouse in Tampa,  » Read More

Most Android apps can easily ask for basic permissions like storage or camera access. However, some apps require system-level permissions to function properly. Is it possible to seek a retrial? According to Phetchawat Wattanapongsirikul, a list-MP for the Puea Chat Party, the party's legal team was studying two paths that could get Thaksin home: a retrial of the cases against him under the 1983 Retrial of Criminal Case Act and submission of a public-sponsored draft law to secure amnesty for the ex-premier.
