The Clubhouse app features often-interactive live audio discussions in a variety of different topic- or personality-focused rooms, and it’s starting to see more and more of those focused on sports. Plenty of individual sports personalities have been holding Clubhouse discussions, and some leagues have gotten in on the act as well, including the NFL around this year’s draft. Now, the NHL has partnered with Clubhouse and with analysts from NBC (Anson Carter) and Sportsnet (Kris Versteeg) to give fans some access to the upcoming Stanley Cup Final Media Day. Here’s the release on that: The National Hockey League (NHL) and Clubhouse, the social audio app, have teamed up to bring the world closer than ever to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. Stung By Media Coverage, Silicon Valley Starts Its Own Publications

Many journalists who cover technology have no idea what Marc Andreessen, one of the most powerful investors in Silicon Valley, has tweeted lately. That's because the co-founder and general partner of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz loves blocking journalists, along with critics of the tech industry and anyone else who might be seen as an antagonist. "It's become a badge of honor to get blocked by him," said Sara M. Watson, technology critic and senior analyst at data firm Insider Intelligence. As tech reporting has shifted from being dazzled by the latest gadgets and apps to concerned over its impact on people and institutions, Silicon Valley's elite have searched for a way to bypass the critical eye of journalists altogether. Now companies and investors are trying to regain control of the narrative by launching their own media publications, with rah-rah stories that they hope will compete directly with news coverage of technology. The most recent entrant into this trend is Andreessen Horowitz's Future,  » Read More

Listen Up: How Brands Can Join the Audio Revolution on Clubhouse

by David Ciccarelli , Op-Ed Contributor, 2 hours ago What’s the hottest way to share news these days or throw an event? This spring, the NFL chose to use the social media platform Clubhouse to introduce the future stars of football as part of the annual NFL draft. The league partnered with Clubhouse to provide exclusive content to users in the days leading up to the draft. Whether this platform becomes a viable marketing tool remains to be seen, but the partnership should spark everyone’s interest. Clubhouse, which was launched in April 2020, differs from other social platforms in that members interact exclusively through voice. Beyond a user profile picture, there are no photos, videos, or even text messages exchanged. Instead, users engage in active listening in rooms run by clubs and facilitated by moderators. You raise your hand when you want to speak, wait to be called upon, and then unmute your microphone to share your thoughts or ask questions. Right now, only a few hundred thousand users have received an invite to the app (which is only available on iOS),  » Read More

Twitter Spaces Rolls Out Ticketed Social Audio Rooms

on June 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm Twitter has begun allowing some Twitter Spaces hosts to charge money for joining their rooms. The new ticketing feature lets approved Twitter Spaces hosts set prices and room sizes, controls likely to be imitated by the many social audio platforms proliferating this year. Twitter tied the new feature to the unveiling of the new Super Follows option, which lets influencers create a subscription fee for access to exclusive content on their Twitter page. Ticketing Spaces Not just anyone can offer tickets, and the bar is significantly higher than the 600 followers needed to host any Twitter Spaces room. You need to have at least 1,000 active followers and to have hosted a minimum of three Spaces over the last month. Ticketing is also limited to those over 18 who live in the U.S. for now. Those interested in applying can check their eligibility and submit a request in the Twitter app’s sidebar under monetization. Those hosts who Twitter approves can then start creating and scheduling their rooms.  » Read More

Spooky tales a hit on Clubhouse

Bengalis bond over ghost stories and more on the latest virtual-adda zone   |   Published 23.06.21, 10:38 PM Early this month, a friend put up her monthly ‘looking for recommendations’ post on Facebook: “Who’s binge-watching what?” Curious, I started glancing through the comments only to stop at one. It said: “Not watching. Only listening. Bhooter golpo whole night. On Clubhouse.”Spooky, spine-chilling tales at the dead of the night — that’s what keeping Bengalis across the globe wide, wide awake these days, err… nights — all thanks to the latest virtual-adda zone on the digital space, the Clubhouse app. For the uninitiated, it’s a social media platform where users can connect with each other in voice chat rooms. It’s an audio-only app where one can create chat rooms, follow clubs on different themes (or even create one), and host live discussions, where you can drop in just as a listener, or speak if the hosts (called moderators) allow you to. And this is where adda-loving Bangalis from near and far are flocking and bonding together over hair-raising,  » Read More

Facebook rolls out Live Audio Rooms, podcasts in new push to take on Clubhouse

(MENAFN - NewsIn.Asia) June 22 (USA Today) – Facebook has officially jumped into the audio space. The social media giant rolled out a suite of Live Audio Rooms and podcasts on Monday, giving its platform a new foothold in a space that has seen a surge of interest following the meteoric rise of audio-only social apps like Clubhouse during the coronavirus pandemic. Clubhouse has drawn more than 10 million users and has amassed a $1 billion-plus valuation, joining the ranks of Uber and Airbnb as a unicorn startup. That's inspired Facebook, Twitter, Spotify and others to develop their own Clubhouse competitors.  Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need to your Whatsapp each morning. “The audio market is fundamentally very fragmented. Every single platform is doing something specific, either the live audio component or the podcast component,” Fidji Simo, head of Facebook's app, told USA TODAY in an exclusive interview. “Facebook, however, is approaching audio as all of the formats working together.” © Facebook Public figures and select Facebook groups in the U.S.  » Read More

Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces are coming to Twitter

In Twitter’s latest appeal to one-up competitors from Clubhouse to Patreon, the company announced today that it will begin rolling out applications for Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces. Twitter first teased the Super Follow feature during an Analyst Day event in February. Super Follows allow creators on Twitter to generate monthly revenue by offering paywalled content to followers who subscribe to them for $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99 per month. To be eligible, users over the age of 18 need to have 10,000 followers and at least 25 tweets in the last 30 days. Twitter will only take 3% of creators’ revenue after in-app purchase fees – but, on the App Store and Google Play, in-app purchase fees are 30%, which means that creators will take home about two-thirds of what their followers are paying. Once they exceed $50,000 of lifetime earnings on Twitter, the app will take “20% of future earnings after fees.” When combined with the 30% in-app purchase fee, that leaves creators with about half of their followers’ payments.  » Read More

Clubhouse accidentally leaks Backchannel, seemingly a private messaging feature

Clubhouse — which inadvertently sent every other tech platform from Spotify to Facebook scrambling to build out copycat functionality — seems to be taking its first steps away from pure live audio experiences. How do we know this? The company appears to have accidentally leaked a messaging feature, called Backchannel, to some users late last week.Based on several tweets circulating on Friday (including the below screen recording), Backchannel is an apparent means for users to chat via text instead of audio. Apparently the feature was not referenced whatsoever in the app’s release notes of the version, and what was rolled out looks blatantly unfinished. It’s not clear how long this version of Backchannel existed out in the wild, but Clubhouse seemingly removed it in a hurry.Reached for comment, a company spokesperson would only tell The Sports Grind Entertainment that, “as part of our product building process, Clubhouse regularly explores and tests potential features. These functions sometimes become part of the app, sometimes they don’t. We do not comment on potential features.” They said Clubhouse founders sometimes discuss the product roadmap during weekly Sunday Town Halls.  » Read More
