Clubhouse

Clubhouse App

I used Robinhood, WeBull, and Public for the first time. They all have their advantages, but one …

Robinhood; Samantha Lee/Insider I opened brokerage accounts with three trading apps this week and compared the experience of using each. Robinhood by far has the best looking app. But if you want more resources to help you make investing decisions, use WeBull. Robinhood launched in 2013 and is now seeking to go public. WeBull and Public both launched in 2017. See more stories on Insider's business page. Robinhood launched in 2013 and quickly gripped new and young investors wanting to try their hands at retail trading. The trading app, which is seeking to go public with a valuation as high as $30 billion, had about 13 million users at the end of 2020. But the app came under intense scrutiny from lawmakers, regulators, and customers after it halted trading of GameStop as retail traders drove up the stock price to all-time highs in January. Some have said the app makes investing too much like a game,  » Read More

The play, ‘Lakshadeepam’, will be staged on Clubhouse by Kanal Samskarika Vedhi on May 30 Clubhouse is taking over social media in a big way. The invitation-only, audio-only app is emerging as a popular space to host events, discussions and more ever since it had a beta launch for Android early this month. A group of theatrepersons in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is all set to host a play on the platform on May 30.“This is perhaps be the first Malayalam play to be staged on Clubhouse. The app allows participation of up to 5,000 people, which is a big audience for a play. The ongoing tussle between the Government and social media platforms has seen more people flocking to Clubhouse. There have been events on the app that has had participation of 4,000 members. We did a rehearsal and the result was encouraging. It is like a radio play,” says Hazim Amaravila of Thiruvananthapuram-based Kanal Samskarika Vedhi that is presenting the play. The drama, Lakshadeepam, written and directed by Hazim, is based around the current controversy over the Union Territory of Lakshadweep following a slew of reforms announced by newly-appointed Administrator Praful Patel.  » Read More

Twitter brings Spaces to the web on desktop and mobile

Twitter continues its rollout of Spaces by adding the ability to join in-progress chats from the web for the first time. You can't create a Space yet, but that's likely in the works for a future update. Still, being able to listen in to a new Space is a good start – and you can set reminders to join a scheduled Space, too. Spaces are making their way to Twitter for web! Now you can join a Space to listen in, test out the new transcription design, and set reminders to join a scheduled Space. https://t.co/xFTEeAgM4x— Twitter Support (@TwitterSupport) May 26, 2021 Spaces are Twitter's answer to Clubhouse, allowing people to join rooms and talk in real-time while a moderator controls who can and cannot speak. Here's where Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces fall short

Social networks such as Twitter are competing with startup Clubhouse by launching their own live audio products. Getty Images On Thursday, Jeremy Browning, a Twitter product manager, gave the public a behind-the-scenes look at a new feature the company built for live audio chats. Not everyone, though, could understand what he was saying.Fittingly, Browning hosted the conversation on Spaces, Twitter's live audio product. The audio chat tool has live captioning, a feature meant to help hearing-impaired people. Twitter users trying to follow the conversation solely through the captions likely had a tough time deciphering Browning's words. Cut through the chatter Subscribe to CNET's Mobile newsletter for the latest phone news and reviews. "I was sort of by virtue of being employed and Twitter able to see and you Spaces before the war the water public was a small percentage of the pop quiz," a live caption of Browning's remarks in the Twitter Space read. Browning actually told the audience that as a Twitter employee he was able to see new Spaces before a small percentage of the public was.   » Read More

Clubhouse's staggered rollout is detrimental and risking its momentum

Clubhouse might be able to grow the number of daily active users now that its service is open to Android phones, but experts think the staggered rollout will affect the overall success of the platform. The voice-only chatting social media platform announced on May 21 its global rollout to Android users, but similar to iOS users, it will be on an invite-only basis. You'll also be able to use Clubhouse only on Android 8.0 and above, though that shouldn't be an issue for any of the best Android phones. The platform launched in 2020 and, at the time, was only accessible to iPhone users. The app became so popular that several social media platforms released features that imitated Clubhouse. Alex Kantrowitz, the writer for the Big Technology newsletter, said in an interview that while it's common for many app developers to release on one platform first, in the case of Clubhouse, the move was "especially detrimental." Kantrowitz explained that Clubhouse is the type of social media platform where conversations will happen all the time.  » Read More

The influencers are burned out, too

Earlier this month, the writer and English professor Barrett Swanson published a story in Harper’s about his five days at Clubhouse, the collective of dozens of college-aged social media hopefuls living in a smattering of content mansions in Los Angeles. He emerged with the sneaking suspicion that maybe all of this is bad, not only for the world but for the influencers themselves. “For a moment, I cannot remember who I am or why I am sitting here amid this sea of beautiful young people, all of them desperate for recognition, their whole lives ahead of them, empty at the absolute center,” he writes in the closing paragraph. “TikTok is a sign of the future, which already feels like a thing of the past. It is the clock counting down our fifteen seconds of fame, the sound the world makes as time is running out.” It’s easily the best and most depressing piece of journalism about famous TikTokers I’ve ever read, a “Slouching Towards Bethlehem” for influencers. Here are some things Swanson witnesses on his visit: a 19-year-old who just made $60,000 by filming a Lady and the Tramp-style kiss with his girlfriend as sponcon for a chicken-fingers joint;  » Read…

Public, the trading and social networking app, is the next app to get into live audio. Like many apps before it, the company says it’s planning to roll out live audio features starting this week under the name Public Live. Unlike its competitors, like Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces, however, Public will initially program these chats with moderators it pays, meaning not just anyone can start a conversation. It’ll host about three events a week, and users will receive a push notification to join, along with a badge inside the app allowing them to hop into it. Topics might include coverage of an upcoming IPO, the day’s news, or analysis. The first chat will be between Scott Galloway, who co-hosts the Pivot podcast and is an investor in the app, and Stephanie Ruhle, an NBC News senior business correspondent and MSNBC anchor. It’ll be live in the app this upcoming Wednesday and won’t be recorded for publish anywhere else. Other future hosts include Nora Ali, a former Cheddar News anchor, and Kinsey Grant, co-founder of Thinking is Cool and the former host of the Morning Brew Business Casual podcast.  » Read More
