MEMPHIS, Tenn. (InvestigateTV) — Every day, 13 people die waiting for an organ transplant. More than 100,000 people are on the national transplant waiting list, and 85 percent of them need a kidney. Living organ donation — in which a person donates one kidney, part of their liver or certain other organs and tissues — is a critical solution to that shortage. “Living organ donation is critically important because that previous gift of life is literally the difference between life or death for people on the waiting list. The wait for a deceased kidney donation is far too long,” Dr. Steven Potter, a transplant surgeon, said. For one Memphis patient, doctors said the wait would be five to seven years. She was placed on the list and began to hope.
