Dispo repeatedly changes privacy policy after location data questions

Nothing to see here, just cleaning up. Image: Malte Mueller / getty By Jack Morse2021-03-09 23:24:22 UTC Dispo's privacy policy is apparently still developing.  The hot new photo app, which has raised $20 million in Series A funding, attempts to breathe life into social image sharing by adapting the aesthetic of disposable cameras. On Tuesday, Dispo shed its invite-only skin and opened up to the wider public — quietly, and without notice, updating its privacy policy in the background.  The app's privacy includes a section titled "Information automatically collected," which details numerous types of data collection done by the app. On the afternoon of March 5, that section of the policy explained that Dispo collects location data.  "We collect location data such as information about your device's location, which can be either precise or imprecise," the policy, a screenshot of which is embedded below, explained. "How much information we collect depends on the type and settings of the device you use to access the App." As of March 5.  » Read More

We need to talk about Clubhouse

9 Mar 2021 Serena Barker Singh takes us through the corridors of Clubhouse – and asks whether this is an app that really is like no other – or whether it’s got all the baggage of its social media ancestors. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/thefourcast/210309_Clubhouse_Mix_-_2145.mp3There’s a brand new app in town making waves and changing the way we chat with one another.  An app where all the topics on the tip of your tongue are discussed by people from around the world – all live, all audio, like live podcasts with no limits. But there’s the catch: if this world gives you free flowing live chat, where are the controls and where are the limits? As Clubhouse rises in popularity, so too rises a darker side around privacy, harassment, racism, misogyny, misinformation. These are the age-old problems of social media – so why has this app not learnt the lessons? Today, Serena Barker Singh, takes us through the corridors of Clubhouse – and asks whether this is an app that really is like no other – or whether it’s got all the baggage of its social media ancestors.  » Read More

Spice up your daily pandemic walk with these apps

Photo: Allison Johnson / The Verge As you may have heard one or two times, we’re now roughly a year into COVID and pandemic lockdown life. To fill the void in our lives that was once occupied by social gatherings, visiting family, and breathing indoor air freely, many of us have turned to new hobbies and habits. Some of them are even healthy! Taking a daily or, if I’m being honest, semi-daily walk is a lockdown habit that has seen me through These Unprecedented Times. I’m not alone, either — without gyms or really anywhere else to go at all, lots of us have embraced (or at times, endured) a daily walk around the neighborhood. To be sure, it’s not always easy. I got tired of walking by the same houses and the same pieces of fossilized trash about six months in. It rains a lot where I live and that can turn an otherwise pleasant walk into a real bummer. Other days, the motivation just isn’t there and the mailbox is as far as I get.  » Read More

'I get chills': How NY Mets' Marcus Stroman designed his cleats, and what they mean

CLOSE Mets beat writer Justin Toscano recaps the first week of spring training. NorthJersey.comPORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Even as Marcus Stroman refines his repertoire and incorporates his new split-change pitch during spring training, he also continues pushing his personal brand. This is Stroman. Anyone can start a club on Clubhouse now. What does this mean for .Club?

A new feature could improve the interplay between Clubhouse and .club domains. Anyone can start a club on Clubhouse now. (And yes, you have a fat cat.) It’s been quite a ride for .Club this year thanks to the popular Clubhouse app. Some people are buying .club domains to use in conjunction with the app, and many more are registering .club domains with the hope that the app’s popularity will increase the value of .club domains. We can debate whether the app’s popularity will make .club domains more valuable and what the intentions are of people pushing this idea. Certainly, a lot of people bought domains they’ll drop in a year. But there is some potential interplay between the app and the domains. The problem, until the latest app update that most people got today, is that most users couldn’t create a club on Clubhouse. They could create a room, but not a club. The latest update lets anyone create a club. I believe this improves the interplay between using Clubhouse and owning a .club domain.  » Read More
