Clubhouse

Clubhouse App

Here's why Bill Gates prefers Android to iOS

The Clubhouse app hosted another tech industry insider for an interview in recent days — this time, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. In a discussion hosted by journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin, Gates talked about everything from the coronavirus pandemic to COVID vaccines and the rumored Apple Car. Gates also explained why he prefers his Android phone to an iPhone. As soon as Bill Gates entered Clubhouse for the first time this week, journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin temporarily ignored some of the questions he’d planned to ask about everything from the coronavirus pandemic to climate change and Gates’ new book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster. Sorkin, instead, pointed out to the Microsoft co-founder that he was getting a barrage of tweets all asking the same thing, sent from people as soon they heard about Gates’ chat in Clubhouse, the hot new iOS-only social app: Wait, Bill Gates has an iPhone? Clubhouse is 'problematic from a data protection perspective', says expert

A data privacy and ethics expert believes there are several key data protection issues associated with the Clubhouse app. Clubhouse is an audio-only platform that users must be invited to join. It has already amassed legions of fans and several famous faces, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Drake, Kanye West, and Oprah Winfrey. However, in recent weeks concerns have been raised about the company's privacy policies, with the firm promising to review its cyber-security. Daragh O'Brien, Managing Director of Castlebridge, said there are several data protection problems relating to Clubhouse. He outlined some of his concerns on the Tech Talk with Jess Kelly programme. "The first concern I have is that after the kerfuffle we had last year about Zoom, it looks like the promoters and founders of Clubhouse haven't learned anything about where the world is now in terms of people's attitude to data protection and what the laws that exist around the world actually are in terms of what you can do," he said.  » Read More

There's a social media app that's invite-only — I want in (Opinion)

Guys, I’m doomed! It’s only been a few months since I have purged the Instagram app from my life because of how it was taking it over. I had a serious addiction and I knew it was just time to let it go. But now, there’s Clubhouse. Clubhouse is going to be the new Instagram. And the way they’ve set it up, people are clamoring to get on it. Which means, so am I! It’s like that popular Christmas toy that’s manufactured in small quantities to purposely make it difficult to get, thus increasing the demand. As if Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and Facebook weren’t enough, Clubhouse is on the rise. It launched last summer, allowing just over a thousand users, most of whom were Uber-hip Silicon Valley workers and Venture capitalists. The app is unique from other social networking apps because it’s closed and hierarchical, meaning users must be invited by someone already on the app in order to access content. As users can only invite two people to join the app, it is pretty exclusive.Access to Clubhouse gives you the opportunity to participate in and watch casual,  » Read More

Orca wants to give boating navigation its 'iPhone moment'

Boating is a hobby steeped in history and tradition — and so is the industry and those that support it. With worldwide connectivity, electric boats, and other technological changes dragging the sector out of old habits, Orca aims to replace the outdated interfaces by which people navigate with a hardware-software combo as slick as any other modern consumer tech. If you’re a boater, and I know at least some of you are, you’re probably familiar with two different ways of chart-plotting, or tracking your location and route: the one attached to your boat and the one in your pocket. The one on your boat is clunky and old-fashioned, like the GPS interface on a years-old budget sedan. The one in your pocket is better and faster — but the phone isn’t exactly seaworthy and the app drains your battery with a quickness. Orca is a Norwegian startup from veterans of the boating and chart-plotters that leapfrogs existing products with a built-from-scratch modern interface. “The industry hasn’t changed in the last 20 years — you have three players who own 80 percent of the business,” said co-founder and CEO Jorge Sevillano.  » Read More

What is Clubhouse?

In what seems like a mere matter of days, the elusive Clubhouse app has penetrated the social media landscape. What is Clubhouse?Clubhouse has quickly become the trendiest social media app. Invite-only, it is based around audio-chat and has been described as “part talkback radio, part conference call, part Houseparty”. It rocketed to fame partially because of the big names associated with it.Vera Rabkina, Head of Product, AppFollow: “Clubhouse has discovered a new niche in what seemed to be a saturated social media market. By monitoring trends in user ratings and conducting a semantic analysis of the reviews, we can get a clearer understanding of the role Elon Musk played in this process, identify some drivers of Clubhouse’s viral growth, and gauge user reactions. Can Elon Musk Take Credit for the App’s Success? It is often claimed that Clubhouse largely owes its success to Elon Musk, who wrote about it on Twitter on several occasions and even conducted a live interview session with Robinhood’s СЕО Vladimir Tenev on 31 January.  » Read More

Quill, the messaging app backed by Index, quietly comes out of stealth to take on Slack

Slack took the workplace communications landscape by storm after it launched its integration-friendly, GIF-tastic chat platform in 2013. Within the space of a decade it entered into the pantheon of Big Tech: First with massive growth and usage, then a series of giant VC rounds and valuations, spawning controversial competition from incumbents, followed by a public listing and ultimately a $27.7 billion acquisition by Salesforce. Now that the cycle is complete, the decks are clear for a Slack disruptor! Today, a new app quietly launched out of stealth called Quill, available by way of apps for the web, MacOS, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. Like Slack, Quill is a messaging app for co-workers to update each other on what they are doing, have conversations about projects and more. It is (also like Slack) priced as a freemium service, with a $15 per user, per month tier giving users more message history and storage. An enterprise tier is also on the cards. Unlike Slack — the implication seems to be — the difference is that Quill is about delivering messaging in a nondistracting way that doesn’t take up too much of your time, your concentration and your energy. Quill bills itself…
