Thursday, February 18, 2021 Memphis on New Social Media App Clubhouse Posted By Christen Hill on Thu, Feb 18, 2021 at 1:42 PM click to enlarge Christen Hill Clubhouse app on cell phone Clubhouse is a new social media audio platform where listening is key. There are no pretty photos to post (other than your profile picture), or videos. Users can’t post long monologues in writing. This audio-only social media has endless chat rooms where users can hear from others on any topic they choose. One can only join if they are invited by a current user, however, each user only gets two invites to start.   Influencers from around the globe have joined. People like Oprah, Drake, Elon Musk, and more. Discussions can last hours. Typically, moderators schedule discussions where they host experts or influencers to join.  You can peruse at random or focus your attention to clubs that engage in specific conversations. In Memphis, the number of clubs are growing.  Bluffing on Beale is a roast club for what the youngster might call “roasting” or “checking” people. The club warns to not take offense at any of the things said in the room. It’s just for kicks and giggles. …

LiveRamp ATS – Another ID solution: Wednesday's daily brief

MarTech Today’s daily brief features daily insights, news, tips, and essential bits of wisdom for today’s digital marketer. If you would like to read this before the rest of the internet does, sign up here to get it delivered to your inbox daily. Good morning, Marketers, I guess we should start taking Clubhouse seriously. I’ve seen an influx of stories about opportunities on the new audio networking app Clubhouse. Not to advertise, but to promote brand reputation by offering valuable content. That content, as I understand it, comes in the form of live spoken word. No recordings, no texts, no private messages — just conversation. So a brand better have something of value to talk about. Brands are starting to sponsor rooms, individual brand representatives are building followings and influencers are doing their usual thing — talking about brands. Of course, all this is hearsay, as I’ve never been on Clubhouse. Right now, it’s invitation (and iPhone) only — something which is likely to change. I am tempted to ask around for an invite, but where am I going to find those extra few hours every day to hang out and get noticed? Kim Davis Editorial Director LiveRamp’s alternative to…

Why Is Everyone Talking About Clubhouse?

In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, two techies started a new social network built around an increasingly unloved feature of people’s iPhones: actually talking into it. The app, called Clubhouse, was at first niche. There are no posts, no pictures, no videos. As if to underline how little time you need to look at it, the home screen is a white-on-beige endless scroll of conference calls, called “rooms,” filled with people you might not know organized around topics like police brutality, music, sex, or whatever else was on people’s minds. Users can be moderators, hosting their own conversations and controlling who speaks. A digital audience can listen in, or ask to participate if they have something to say. The action happened all in your earbuds.   The app, started by Paul Davison, an entrepreneur who’d previously sold a company to Pinterest, and Rohan Seth, a former Google engineer, was a way to get people talking and trading ideas spontaneously, without filters or having to put on an outfit, they later wrote. At first, it was open to only a few thousand users — though they were the right users, Silicon Valley venture capitalists and others who controlled the flow…

Parler Returns Online, Shawnee Gets $22 million for Illinois Build, Clubhouse's Quantum Leap

February 16, 2021 — After being abruptly removed from web servers by tech giants on January 10, the controversial social network Parler returned online on Monday.   Parler is a social network dominated by right-wing users which, following the removal of former President Trump from Twitter, grew in popularity. It became the number one downloaded app on Apple and Google app stores. The app was removed by the major app stores and its web host after its executives’ refused to tackle the problem of disinformation that grew on its platform. The social network was able to get back online with the help of small web-hosting firm SkySilk, and a Russian company through DDoS-Guard, a firm that routes internet traffic and protects websites from cyberattacks. Experts said the concern with that arrangement is that the Russian government would be able to surveil Parler’s users. On Monday, SkySilk chief executive Kevin Matossian released a statement defending the relationship with Parler saying: “SkySilk does not advocate nor condone hate, rather, it advocates the right to private judgment and rejects the role of being the judge, jury, and executioner. Unfortunately, too many of our fellow technology providers seem to differ,” he said. “While we may…

Parler crawls back online empty and with a Tea Party CEO

Parler, a social network adopted by the far right and recently kicked off AWS for its userbase’s habit of advocating violence, is back online. The restoration questions the notion that “big tech” can take and keep an unwanted presence offline, but Parler’s return is not quite a triumph, and its new CEO doesn’t suggest much of a change in philosophy. Users can now log in to Parler on the web, but when they do they will find that all their old posts and content have been removed. It’s unclear whether this was a consequence of the hurried exit from AWS last month, a scorched-earth policy regarding the content that got the site in hot water in the first place or for some other reason. Fortunately someone had the presence of mind to make a backup, though not with the intention of restoring it. @donk_enby scraped millions of posts and media files from the site for posterity, something that has already borne fruit as researchers have used the files to show, for example, where certain users were on the day of the Capitol riots. (She is currently pointing out various problems with the new Parler’s web rollout.) The new site is…

Can Dispo Really Be The Next Instagram?

Dispo is a new photo-sharing app that elicits the feelings associated with using a disposable camera. Can it be the new Instagram? The app launched last year on Product Hunt. But it is its newly released version that has got Twitter and the tech world talking this weekend.Related | Google Photos Gets A New Video EditorThere has not been a ton of innovation in the world of social apps lately. And there certainly has not been many social apps that actually were launched and survived more than a few weeks. Clubhouse being the exception, of course, but that is because it brings a whole new world with audio conversations. And then there is Dispo. Originally called Disposable, the app aimed to be an alternative to Instagram that lets you create and share photos that elicit nostalgic feelings associated with using a disposable camera. This intention is found deep into the app’s design that is meant to imitate the delayed gratification of getting a photo developed before being able to view and share it.Yes, that is right. On the contrary to modern social media, Dispo is betting on not satisfying your instant need for gratification. After taking your snaps on the app, you have…

Clubhouse: The Exclusive Social Network Connecting Egyptians at Home and Abroad

Clubhouse: The Exclusive Social Network Connecting Egyptians at Home and Abroad On Thursday morning, a daily Egypt ‘room’ on Clubhouse rocketed to 2,000 listeners, sparking joy and amazement among the Egyptian speakers in the room. “I was honestly shocked and amazed. For a few seconds I wasn’t able to understand what was going on but the group of amazing people who were co-moderating did great job and handled it in the best way,” says Sherin Ewase, an Egyptian Clubhouse user who regularly schedules and moderates rooms for Egyptian users. The room quickly shifted to discussions about Egyptian culture, food and travel destinations, with non-Egyptians invited to ask questions about visiting Egypt, Egyptian music and opportunities to live and work in Egypt. Clubhouse is a social media application that recently hit the Egyptian market and is currently only available on Apple devices. The app, which is currently invitation-only, allows both friends and strangers to connect in ‘rooms’ and ‘clubs’ to listen in on various topics initiated by moderators and their guests. Anyone who enters a room can ‘raise their hand’ to be invited to the ‘stage’ to speak alongside the moderators and guests. For Sherin, Clubhouse provides an opportunity for Egyptians…
