Making reading cool again

Chonrungsri Chalermchaikit, president of Pubat. Things are a little different this year. However, the more things change, the more important it is to keep traditions alive like the magic of reading. After going online last year in response to the Covid-19 situation, the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand (Pubat) is gearing up for the comeback of the 49th National Book Fair and 19th Bangkok International Book Fair in both the digital and physical format. But due to the third round of the Covid-19 surge, the National Book Fair will be held virtually from April 17-25 while the in-person event is postponed to next month. More than 223 publishing houses have been confirmed to take part in the event this year including Book Wonderland, General Books, Education, Children's Books, Old Books, Foreign Books, and Fiction. "Although the number of publishers taking part has dwindled compared to previous years, many have still come forward and are ready to put up their stalls, which is an encouraging sign," Chonrungsri Chalermchaikit, president of Pubat, told Life during a recent round-table interview with the press.  » Read More

Fake ads for a non-existent version of Clubhouse spread malware to victoms

Possibly because an Android version of the app is still months away, quite a few bad actors have been tricking Android users into installing malware-loaded fake versions of a non-existent Clubhouse for Android app. And now TechCrunch is reporting that internet criminals have been taking out ads on Facebook for fake versions of a Clubhouse for PC variant that is not only not real, but is full of malware. The only platform with a legitimate version of Clubhouse is iOS. The audio only chatroom has become a very popular place to hang, but users need an invitation to join and for now the only place you can download the app from is the App Store. The Facebook ads connect to pages on the social media site that impersonate Clubhouse.Tapping on the ad opens up a fake Clubhouse for PC website. A link is included that when tapped, downloads malware onto the victim's device. The malicious app seeks instructions from a C&C (command and control) server about what to do next. Cybercriminals Bought Facebook Ads for a Fake Clubhouse App That Was Riddled With Malware

Photo: Josh Edelson/AFP (Getty Images)Cybercriminals have been pushing Facebook users to download a Clubhouse app “for PC,” something that doesn’t exist. The app is actually a trojan designed to inject malware into your computer. The popular new invite-only chat app is only available on iPhone but worldwide interest in the platform has risen and users are clamoring for Android and, presumably, “PC” versions.Per TechCrunch, the malicious campaign used Facebook ads and pages to direct platform users to a series of fake Clubhouse websites. Those sites, hosted in Russia, asked visitors to download the app, which they promised was just the most recent version of the product: “We tried to make the experience as smooth as possible. You can check it out right now!” one proclaims. However, once downloaded, the app would begin signaling to a command and control (C&C) server. In cyberattacks, the C&C is typically the server that informs malware what to do once it has infected a system. Testing of the app through malware analysis sandbox VMRay apparently showed that,  » Read More

Reddit's Reportedly Developing its Own Clubhouse-Like Audio Rooms Feature

With audio social still gaining traction, and providing more ways for users to stay connected, it seems that almost every platform is now considering their own take on the function, and how it could be integrated into their app. And Reddit may be the latest one joining this trend - according to new reports, Reddit's currently testing its own take on audio social, with audio rooms within subreddits. As reported by Mashable: "Reddit is quietly exploring a new feature that would enable moderator-run voice chats, possibly similar to Clubhouse, according to a source familiar with the company's plan. Development is still in the early stages, and was described as confidential." Mashable notes that it's sought clarification from Reddit on the project, which we have as well, but there's no official confirmation of the project as yet. But it would make sense. Reddit's been working on more options to boost real-time engagement and interaction over the past few years, with the addition of tools like live-streaming,  » Read More

Raising CAID  Procter & Gamble took part in early tests by Chinese trade groups and tech companies to bypass Apple’s upcoming privacy changes, according to The Wall Street Journal. P&G experimented with the so-called CAID (China Advertising ID), which uses unique device attributes to identify users (i.e. fingerprinting), as a possible workaround to the expected loss of iPhone audience data later this month. A P&G spokesperson told WSJ that it aims to “deliver useful content consumers want in a way that prioritizes data privacy, transparency and consent. That means partnering with platforms and publishers – both directly and through our advertising associations across the globe.” More. Networks of influence: How Floww is changing the startup game

When trying to change an entire system, we have to be next-level driven and ready to double down. Meanwhile, startups, the venture capital that backs them and the illiquid market have largely remained the same for decades. Venture capitalists pick the companies they want to back, mostly via warm introductions from their existing network – friends of friends. Then, once these founders and startups are funded, there is a lack of data on pretty much every aspect of the business.   This way of connecting means the process has inherent bias and some of the best entrepreneurs remain hidden – unbacked and unable to share their visions on the scale they deserve, simply because they don’t belong to the right network. An early passion for tech Martijn De Wever, serial entrepreneur and Founder of Floww, is changing all of that. He grew up fixing computers that his dad brought back from his job at IBM. It was here that his true passion for technology and innovation began.  De Wever later combined this passion with his wide-ranging experience as a London credit trader to launch his own venture captial firm,  » Read More
