Clubhouse

It’s dusk, and bugs are chirping all around me. I’m wandering through the middle of a big, virtual swamp toward the sound of thumping bass off in the distance. There isn’t much else nearby — some trees, a couple of other players. It’s mostly just me and the sound emanating from a large wooden structure strung up with lights sitting farther out into the swamp. When I finally arrive, it rises above me: the official clubhouse of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. I make for the door to head inside. Except I find I can’t get access; even though the lights are on in the house, the doors don’t actually open. There’s nothing to do. These were my first steps inside the virtual world themed after the infamous cartoon monkeys that became the symbol of everything about the NFT craze. Even though the NFT hype has died down, Yuga Labs, the company behind BAYC and a few other NFT collections, is about to make a big new digital push with another early 2020s buzzword, a metaverse called Otherside.  » Read More

The Salt Lake City Planning Commission on Oct. 8 approved a redevelopment of the Lincoln Plaza shopping center at 145 East 1300 South, clearing a 42‑unit apartment and 95‑unit townhome proposal after separate votes on design review and a plan development modification. Staff presented the project and recommended approval; the commission then voted unanimously to approve the design review and later approved the plan development application 7–1 with conditions. The plan development vote allowed a limited front‑yard setback reduction and required a State Street vehicle entry among other conditions. The proposal calls for two apartment buildings facing 1300 South, a clubhouse and 95 townhomes clustered around shared open space. Grant Amon, planning staff, told commissioners the application was filed earlier this year under the CC (community commercial) standards but now sits in a MU‑5 area; staff reviewed the request against the CC standards that applied at the time of filing and recommended approval of both petitions. “The applicant states the project encourages efficient use of land and infrastructure with a design that clusters town homes and apartments around shared open space and a clubhouse,” Amon said during the presentation.  » Read More

Seattle Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo was being interviewed in the clubhouse following the team's Game 7 loss in the American League Championship Series to the Toronto Blue Jays when, suddenly, in the background, you can hear an anguished scream. Mariners' fans understand heartbreak -- they can relate to that scream. For most of the 49-season existence of the Mariners, fans of the club relied on hope: hope for the first winning season, hope the franchise didn't relocate, hope of making the playoffs for the first time, hope to end a 20-year playoff drought.  » Read More

The Los Angeles Dodgers are aiming for a second consecutive World Series championship. It hasn't been done since the New York Yankees 25 years ago. Shortstop... LOS ANGELES(AP) — The NL Championship Series trophy sat on a small table in the center of the Los Angeles Dodgers clubhouse with a small sign attached reading ‘Team Effort.’ If Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers have their way, it'll soon be replaced by the Commissioner's Trophy, signifying a second straight World Series championship, a feat last accomplished by the New York Yankees 25 years ago. “I think everybody is locked and loaded and ready to see some history,” shortstop Mookie Betts said. “We’re ready to make it.” In a city where image is everything, the Dodgers are thinking dynasty. “It wasn’t really a good opportunity when we were looking at that three months ago,” infielder Miguel Rojas said, thinking back to the Dodgers' second-half struggles, “but now it’s like it’s here. We have it in front of us and we’re going to give it everything we have.” The Dodgers practiced Monday while Game 7 of the AL Championship Series between Seattle and Toronto played on the empty stadium's video boards.  » Read More
