Meta has partnered with Anduril Industries to build augmented and virtual reality devices for the military, eight years after it fired the defense firm's founder, Palmer Luckey. Luckey joined Meta when it was still called Facebook following the social media company's 2014 acquisition of Oculus, the virtual reality headset biz he founded. He left the then-Facebook branded corp in 2017, with some reports stating his $10,000 political donation to an anti-Hillary Clinton group in the runup to the 2016 presidential election had been a factor. Others alleged he'd faced pressure to publicly endorse libertarian candidate Gary Johnson instead of his preferred candidate Donald Trump. A Facebook spokesperson denied that Palmer's departure was political back in 2018, when the Wall Street Journal made that claim. Whatever the case, Meta's donation of $1 million to the Trump inaugural fund in December 2024 was by definition political. A Maserati Ghibli II that is believed to have been the donor car behind the 2020 Project Rekall restomod proposal, has been found for sale on a Facebook group. The car was put together by Garage Italia, the company founded by Lapo Elkann, the great-grandson of Fiat founder Giovanni Agnelli – and board member of Ferrari and head of promotion for the Fiat Group. Project Rekall was revealed on Maserati’s now-defunct Fuoriserie Instagram account as a modern take on the Shamal (pictured above). The car used key elements of the Shamal’s look – the wide box ‘arches, the windscreen spoiler, the B-pillar and more – while the interior used a similar architecture with digital instruments and bucket seats. The Fuoriserie account encouraged social media users to “join the resistance, make the hard choices together and we’ll see it through to the end”. The data was left unprotected by an unknown database owner and then accessed by cybercriminals via infostealer malware. Although the database has been removed from public access, the damage is seemingly done. So what should you do if you think any of your login credential data was compromised?  A percentage of the login credentials in the 47.42GB file are likely outdated. But some passwords and usernames may still be active. Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the public’s interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and delivering malware via text-to-video tools. According to researchers at Mandiant, the criminals are setting up websites claiming to offer “AI video generator” services, and then using those fake tools to distribute information stealers, Trojans, and backdoors. Links to the malicious websites were brought to the researchers’ attention by ads and links in comments on social media platforms. The researchers uncovered thousands of malicious ads on Facebook and LinkedIn—beginning in November 2024—that promote fake AI video generator tools such as “Luma AI,” “Canva Dream Lab,” and “Kling AI.” To avoid detection, the group constantly rotates the domain used in the ads and creates new ads every day, while using both compromised and newly created accounts. The campaign operates through more than 30 websites that imitate popular legitimate AI tools. Researchers identified the first payload as the Starkveil dropper (detected by Malwarebytes/ThreatDown) classified as Trojan.Crypt.
