Miners fight back in the Pilbara with cash and lawyers – AFR

Rio Tinto has staved off a union agreement in the Pilbara by handing out $25,000 pay rises while BHP launched legal action to curtail allegedly misleading union social media posts, as the mining giants fight efforts to re-establish widespread organised labour in the region. The separate actions by the two major miners are part of a broader pushback against the reunionisation of the iron ore-rich region of WA for the first time in 30 years, which has triggered applications to force bargaining across the sector. He’s the Man! Facebook page chronicles Mankato’s funny side | Local News | mankatofreepress.com

As the hiss of an espresso machine mostly drowns out the smooth sounds of the Wilco song playing, I scan the room for the mystery man I’m supposed to meet. Is it the balding man in the plaid shirt sitting cross-legged in the corner reading the newspaper? Could it be the pierced-lipped hipster sipping a turtle mocha and wearing studio-grade headphones, the one who only looks up from his laptop to cast furtive and judgmental glances at folks walking in the door? Or maybe it’s the guy chatting with an acquaintance at a table against the wall, the regular-looking fellow in the respectable ballcap and black jacket? Yep. That’s him. You don’t know him. Or maybe you do. Either way, you won’t get the answer here. We, being the kind of news organization that hates to ruin a good thing, have every intention of respecting the request for anonymity from … drumroll, please … Mankato Man. If you’re a regular on Facebook in the Mankato area,  » Read More

Warning: Facebook Ads for AI Video Generators Might Be Malware | PCMag

AI video generators have exploded in popularity, allowing users to create videos they never could have recorded in the real world. Along with millions of users who are using these legitimate apps, cybercriminals have also taken note and flooded Facebook with malicious ads that send people to fake websites teeming with malware.  Google’s threat intelligence unit Mandiant reports cybercriminals have been posting Facebook ads that masquerade as real AI video generators like Canva Dream Lab, Luma AI and Kling AI, but instead are intended to distribute malware. These ads look real when they’re posted to Facebook, but instead lure users to a fake website that deploys “payloads such as Python-based infostealers and several backdoors,” according to Mandiant.  Examples of malicious Facebook ads (Credit: Mandiant/Google) Mandiant found ads for over 30 such malicious websites; most were posted on Facebook but a handful of them appeared on LinkedIn. To avoid being detected by Meta, cybercriminals are constantly modifying their domains and publishing new ads daily.  » Read More

Authorities discover $100K in counterfeit cash after Facebook Marketplace deal

Michigan police uncovered $100,000 in counterfeit cash at a suspect's home after a Facebook Marketplace deal went awry. (Scripps News Group) Investigators in Michigan said they found $100,000 in counterfeit cash at a home following a Facebook Marketplace purchase. Lieutenant Rene Gonzalez with the Michigan State Police Brighton post said one sketchy transaction blew an alleged counterfeiter’s cover, and it was just the tip of the iceberg. He said the suspect bought a drone through Facebook Marketplace for $800 using counterfeit cash in late March. “They met up at the victim’s residence. The transaction of the cash was completed, and the property (was) turned over to the suspect," Gonzalez said "The victim went back in the home and realized that the money that she was given was counterfeit. So, that’s when police were contacted.“ Detectives discovered that other law enforcement agencies in the state are investigating similar cases involving the same person. Details from each case helped them develop a suspect. RELATED STORY | Fake designer goods warning: Could you spot a counterfeit?  » Read More
