SINGAPORE – One Sng Chia Huat, who goes by Rich Sng on Facebook, put up two posts on the social media site falsely accusing two ministers of being aware that Fujian gang member Su Haijin had broken laws but condoned it. He also falsely accused Health Minister Ong Ye Kung and Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat of dishonestly pretending not to know Su, being involved in or susceptible to corruption or bribery, and being part of a system that protects criminals like Su. Both ministers, in a joint statement on May 12, said they have sent Mr Sng letters from their lawyers, and will be suing him for defamation if he does not make the reparations they have requested. The statement added that the allegations made by Mr Sng in his posts are baseless and false. An earlier joint statement on May 6 had detailed how both ministers do not know Su personally, and did not have any contact with him before or after they had dinner with him. Singapore tycoon Sam Goi said he hosted the private dinners where Su was present,  » Read More

New York, May 12, 2025—Taliban authorities in southeastern Ghazni Province must immediately and unconditionally release journalist Sulaiman Rahil, who was detained on May 5 by intelligence agents, the Committee to Protect Journalists said Monday. “Sulaiman Rahil is the latest of many Afghan journalists to be swept up by the notorious General Directorate of Intelligence without explanation or charge,” said CPJ Asia Program Coordinator Beh Lih Yi. “The Taliban continue to show zero tolerance for independent journalists who report anything other than the group’s strictly censored narratives. The Taliban’s intelligence agency is attempting to control the media through fear and to prevent any honest reporting about the difficulties of life in Afghanistan today.” Rahil, director of the local, independent Radio Khushal, was detained in Ghazni city after publishing a video on Facebook highlighting the plight of two impoverished women, according to the exiled Afghanistan Journalists Center watchdog group. CPJ was unable to locate the video. Two days prior to his arrest, Rahil had also published a video on Facebook alleging that the provincial head of the Taliban-run National Radio and Television of Afghanistan had insulted him,  » Read More

A woman who reconnected with an ex-boyfriend on Facebook 27 years after they dated has revealed they are now husband and wife. Americans have a pretty low opinion of social media. In a Pew Research Center survey 64 percent of adults said they felt social media had a mostly negative effect on the way things are going in the U.S. But there are occasions when it can be a force for good, whether it be helping a dog get adopted or reuniting a baby with a lost toy. Aimee Snyder, who currently lives in Louisville, Kentucky, knows only too well the way social media can change your life for the better. It all started when Snyder found herself doing what countless others have done, scrolling through her social media feed. "I was feeling a bit nostalgic and searching Facebook for people I knew. I found a girl who went to the same church I had as a kid." Snyder told Newsweek.  » Read More
