Bill to have big tech pay for local news advances in Oregon Legislature – OPB

A bill that would require large tech companies to compensate newsrooms for the local journalism on platforms like Google and Facebook is advancing to the floor of the Oregon state Senate. Democrats on the Senate Committee on Rules on Monday advanced Senate Bill 686 to the floor over Republican opposition. The bill would have tech companies pay at least $122 million annually to access the media produced by journalists across Oregon. It would also allow companies to determine a different payment through arbitration and fund a consortium at the University of Oregon that supports journalism statewide through grants. By BRYCE DOLE/Oregon Public Broadcasting SALEM — A bill that would require large tech companies to compensate newsrooms for the local journalism on platforms like Google and Facebook is advancing to the floor of the Oregon Senate. It would also allow companies to determine a different payment through arbitration and fund a consortium at the University of Oregon that supports journalism statewide through grants. It’s sponsored by 14 Democrats and one Republican, Sen. Dick Anderson, R-Lincoln City. As Oregon newsrooms struggle and local reporting jobs plummet, supporters say the bill would provide a much-needed boost that could encourage civic engagement and accountability.  » Read More

Prices Spike in Brentwood, West Hollywood, and Santa Monica Amid Post-Fire Housing Rush

Displaced Families Are Reshaping Los Angeles’ Housing Market on the Westside Home sales and prices across Los Angeles surged in the first quarter of 2025 as thousands of residents displaced by January’s devastating wildfires scrambled to find new housing, according to a report released Thursday by Douglas Elliman. Fueled by the Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires, which destroyed homes and forced roughly 13,000 families to relocate, real estate activity soared in many neighborhoods, especially those bordering the fire zones. Total home sales across the city’s Westside climbed 25.2% year-over-year, while sales in the luxury segment, representing the top 10% of the market, jumped 28.9%. Some of the most dramatic spikes were seen in areas adjacent to the burn zones. Santa Monica and Venice saw single-family home sales more than double, while West Hollywood and Century City reported gains exceeding 80%. Despite the intense demand, the supply of homes rose as well. Inventory increased 47.7% citywide as more homeowners and developers rushed to take advantage of rising prices. Those prices didn’t disappoint: The median sales price in the Westside region climbed 7.7% to nearly $2 million.  » Read More

Ghostbusters Fan Pages Return to Facebook Following Long-Term Takedowns

A few years back, we reported on the growing issue of Ghostbusters fan pages being unpublished on Facebook without warning. Meta claimed these removals were tied to Community Standard violations, but many affected pages were long-standing franchise groups engaging primarily in charitable work. While some pages were later restored through appeals, the overall situation remained frustrating, with removals believed to be triggered by automated algorithms mistaking fan-run pages as nefarious. In today’s update, while the problem hasn’t disappeared entirely, the last few weeks have marked a significant step in the right direction. Dozens of Ghostbusters-centric pages, especially those run by charity-focused franchise groups, have been reinstated and relisted. Among the most recent is Germany’s international fan franchise, We Are Ghostbusters Germany. Despite their page being clearly labeled fan-run, it was removed last week, presumably by Meta’s backend AI. Fortunately, the takedown was short-lived, and the page was restored within about a week. Other franchises, however, faced far more extended downtimes. Groups like the Louisiana Ghostbusters, Alabama Ghostbusters,  » Read More

Please welcome to the stage … Anita Dump! The Facebook group with the best and worst …

I remember exactly where I was when I found it. At uni. In a cavernous lecture hall. Slouched in a vaguely uncomfortable seat. Ping. A notification on Messenger. “Lol at this,” wrote my bestie from 14km away, accumulating student debt and little else. I clicked on the link. In that moment, I happened upon the most significant social media community of all time. A Facebook group, titled simply but garnished appropriately: “DRAG NAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!” The name – and enthusiastic use of exclamation marks – says it all: it’s a place for thousands of like-minded individuals to share their inventive names for drag queens. ‘I can almost feel new grey matter forming when I happen upon these word plays’: a typical post from the Facebook group. Photograph: FacebookIt’s organised like so: each day (or whenever inspiration strikes), a member drops a theme into the void. Think: “biscuits”, “the afterlife” or “ethical non-monogamy”. Then the names pile in. For “chocolate”, one participant proffers Emma Nems. Another, Lindor Evangelista. A third chimes in with particular wit: Her/She.  » Read More

Unhinged Maine high school teacher says Trump ‘needs to die,’ calls for Secret … – New York Post

A pixie-faced Maine high school teacher called for the US Secret Service to “take out” those who support President Trump — and said that “Trump and his cronies need to die,” in a string of unhinged social media posts this week.  “The Secret Service has the perfect opportunity, if they choose to step up and take it. You are the ones with the power. Coordinate. Take out every single person who supports Trump’s illegal, immoral, unconstitutional acts,” Waterville Senior High School English teacher JoAnna St. Germain raged on Facebook Tuesday.  Waterville Senior High School English teacher JoAnna St. Germain called for the US Secret Service to “take out” President Trump’s followers on Facebook Tuesday. JoAnna St. Germain/Facebook “If I had the skill set required, I would take them out myself,” the educator wrote. In the same post, she added that she was “not talking about assassinating a president” because a president is “a person duly elected by the American people” – whereas Trump is leading “a fascist dictatorship.” “When I say that Trump and all the sycophants he’s surrounded himself with need to die,  » Read More
