Scammers stealing from family, friends after hacking your Facebook account; How to protect yourself

ORLANDO, Fla. — A Brevard County woman told WFTV her Facebook page was hijacked, and whoever took over the account is using it to scam others.Cyndi Gilbert has been on Facebook for years. She likes capturing life’s precious and fun moments to share them with friends online. She believed Facebook was the perfect platform to do that.“They send invitations to parties; I can see pictures of my kids and my grandchildren,” Gilbert told Action 9 Consumer Investigator Jeff Deal. But earlier this year, somehow, her page got hacked. Someone took over the account and then locked her out. It’s been a frustrating situation.“They have access to all my family, all my family pictures,” Gilbert said. “I can’t get those back.”But what happened next was something she never expected. She learned whoever took over her account was advertising adorable yorkie puppies for sale. It turns out it was part of a popular online pet scam. Victims will send hundreds of dollars for puppies that never get delivered.  » Read More

Meta makes end-to-end encryption a default on Facebook Messenger | Daily Independent

NEW YORK (AP) — Meta is rolling out end-to-end encryption for calls and messages across its Facebook and Messenger platforms, the company announced Thursday. Such encryption means that no one other than the sender and the recipient — not even Meta — can decipher people’s messages. Encrypted chats, first introduced as an optional feature in Messenger in 2016, will now be the standard for all users going forward, according to Messenger head Loredana Crisan. “This has taken years to deliver because we’ve taken our time to get this right,” Crisan wrote in a blog post. “Our engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts and product managers have worked tirelessly to rebuild Messenger features from the ground up.” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised, back in 2019, to bring end-to-end encryption to its platforms after the social media company suffered a string of high profile scandals, notably when Cambridge Analytica accessed user data on Facebook. Privacy advocates again shined a spotlight on Meta after Nebraska investigators reviewed private Facebook messages while investigating an alleged illegal abortion after Roe v.  » Read More

She said when people request Christmas help, they are added to a list with what they're looking for."Our helpers will then come in and say they'll take a family of four, so we'll go on the list and look for that family and the person that's helping will contact them and tell them they're going to pick up their dinner for them and drop it off," Halapia said. People receive assistance in the order in which they request help."Last year we had 109 people seeking help,  » Read More

Disinformation scholar accuses Harvard of muzzling her work related to Facebook after Mark …

A prominent disinformation scholar who left Harvard University in August has accused the school of muzzling her speech and stifling — then dismantling — her research team as it launched a deep dive in late 2021 into a trove of Facebook files she considers the most important documents in internet history. The actions impacting Joan Donovan’s work coincided with a $500 million donation to Harvard by a foundation run by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. In a whistleblower disclosure made public Monday, Donovan seeks investigations into “inappropriate influence” from Harvard’s general counsel, the Massachusetts attorney general’s office and the U.S. Department of Education. The CEO of Whisteblower Aid, a legal nonprofit supporting Donovan, called the alleged behavior by Harvard’s Kennedy School and its dean a “shocking betrayal” of academic integrity at the elite school. “Whether Harvard acted at the company’s direction or took the initiative on their own to protect (Facebook’s) interests, the outcome is the same: corporate interests are undermining research and academic freedom to the detriment of the public,” CEO Libby Liu said in a press statement.  » Read More
