DeLand man resigns from affordable housing committee over ‘8647’ post

Waylan Niece, the DeLand social-services administrator facing scrutiny over a recent Facebook post, has resigned from the Volusia County Affordable Housing Committee. Volusia County Councilman Jake Johansson said Niece left the panel on May 20, several days after posting “8647,” a message local Republicans took as a threat against the life of President Donald Trump. Niece has called that reaction “ludicrous,” and said it was intended as a show of support for former FBI Director James Comey. On May 15, Comey made a similar Instagram post and was then accused by Republicans of encouraging Trump’s assassination. The president himself concurred with that interpretation and opined that Comey is a “dirty cop.” Federal law enforcement officials are investigating Comey, USA TODAY has reported. The four digits can be read as 86, or “get rid of,” Trump, the 47th president. Niece has previously been the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee’s chair.
