Perspective: Facebook and a walk | Northern Public Radio: WNIJ and WNIU

Published February 24, 2026 at 3:53 AM CST Paul Kingsnorth has said “Put the peace of your heart before everything.” I work at this, especially when I walk, but if I’ve made the mistake of reading Facebook first thing, my mind darts like swallows. I’ve scrolled through news of someone’s dog hit by a car, commentary on the latest mass shooting, the latest crazy Illinois law, our politicians acting in their best interest, local weather, an author’s new novel, a friend’s son’s wedding. I click on a reel and see a bridge fail, plunging a horse and rider into a rushing river. Facebook washes my mind, so I can’t think straight. I am outraged and frightened. But still I look. I've seen enough of the wickedness underpinning our country to know some disaster is billowing like a tornado warned storm. There’s an authoritarian noose wrapping around us. I fear it will take violence to snip it. Violence will be the response. As I walk, I watch a reef of clouds off to the northwest tinged a faint mauve.  » Read More

California Wildflowers Bloom Returns Early After Winter Storms – edhat

Early winter storms have transformed parts of California into vivid colors, with landscapes across the state bursting into bloom following early winter storms.   Sharing an image of the Temblor Mountains painted in vibrant coloured wildflowers in a social media post, the U.S. Department of the Interior said strong rainfall years have resulted in the hillsides sporting sweeping bands of color, creating dramatic ribbons of color. While most of the flowers are in bloom at the mountains, there is little display on the valley floor, the department said on its website.  “The wildflowers on Carrizo Plain National Monument are currently prevalent on the Temblor Mountains, with yellows and splashes of orange, with more sprouting every day,” said Monument Manager Johna Hurl. Certain sections of the valley floor are still wet, making some of the roads muddy and impassable.  The early winter storms have set the stage for similarly vibrant displays of colorful blooms across California, drawing several visitors to witness the seasonal spectacle. More flowers will continue to bloom,  » Read More

Hailey Nutter Throws Second No-Hitter in 8-0 Win Sunday – UK Athletics

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Freshman Hailey Nutter threw her second no-hitter in three weeks Sunday as she only faced one above the minimum with Kentucky beating Indiana State 8-0 to close out the 2026 Blues City Invitational in Memphis. With the no-hitter, Nutter becomes the first player at Kentucky to throw multiple no-hitters since Kelsey Nunley did it in 2016 and the freshman has now done it in two of the first three weeks of the season on the heels of her no-no against Loyola-Chicago on Opening Weekend in San Diego. Offensively, Kentucky scored eight runs on 12 hits as the Wildcats had traffic on the basepaths all afternoon and went through three of the Sycamore’s pitchers. Eight of the nine players in Kentucky’s starting order had at least one hit in the game and three Wildcats went for multi-hit games including Karissa Hamilton, who had the walk-off single in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the game. Kentucky completes its road trip 6-0 and is now 12-4 on the season overall,  » Read More

Police seize 100,000 stolen Facebook credentials in cybercrime raid – Help Net Security

Officers from Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime (CBZC) dismantled an organized group that used phishing to seize Facebook accounts and extract BLIK payment codes from victims. Arrest (Source: Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime) Eleven members of an organized criminal group operating in Poland and Germany between May 2022 and May 2024 were identified. Six suspects were placed in pretrial detention as part of the investigation. “Over 100,000 logins and passwords for the aforementioned website were seized, stolen by the perpetrators,” the CBZC said in an announcement. The group set up websites designed to mimic well-known news portals, often featuring sensational headlines such as the alleged death of a public figure. Clicking the link prompted a Facebook login window. When users entered their credentials, the information was captured and later used by the suspects to access accounts and carry out further fraud. Prosecutors have brought more than 400 charges against members of the group, including leading and participating in an organized criminal organization,  » Read More

CT city’s GOP council leader under fire for profane, offensive Facebook posts – Hartford Courant

Leaders are scheduled to decide next month whether to throw the city council’s top Republican out of office after he put up profanity-laden Facebook posts implying that “bullying and intimidation” by the Democratic administration caused another alderman’s death. Impassioned New Britain residents argued both from sides at a recent council meeting, with some calling for leniency for Common Council Minority Leader Robert Smedley while others demanded punishment. Smedley, who had posted under the name Colin Rober, attributed his posts to stress as well as being in grief at the unexpected death on Feb. 3 of Jerrell Hargraves, 36, a fellow Republican alderman. When the council convened, Smedley read a letter that he described as an apology, but never explained his rationale for the posts nor disavowed the insinuations. In a party-line vote Wednesday, the council agreed it will schedule a hearing before mid-March and decide whether Smedley should face punishment up to the maximum level possible, removal from office. The charter doesn’t give much leeway,  » Read More

PA Media Taylor Swift last performed concerts around the UK in 2024 A man has admitted selling fake tickets to Taylor Swift's concerts through Facebook and Gumtree. Facebook ads spread fake Windows 11 downloads that steal passwords and crypto wallets

Attackers are running paid Facebook ads that look like official Microsoft promotions, then directing users to near-perfect clones of the Windows 11 download page. Click Download Now and instead of a Windows update, you get a malicious installer—one that silently steals saved passwords, browser sessions, and cryptocurrency wallet data. “I just wanted to update Windows” The attack starts with something completely ordinary: a Facebook ad. It looks professional, uses Microsoft branding, and promotes what appears to be the latest Windows 11 update. If you have been meaning to keep your PC current, it feels like a convenient shortcut. Click the ad and you land on a site that looks almost identical to Microsoft’s real Software Download page. The logo, layout, fonts, and even the legal text in the footer are copied. The only obvious difference is in the address bar. Instead of microsoft.com, you’ll see one of these lookalike domains: ms-25h2-downloadpro ms-25h2-updatepro ms25h2-downloadpro ms25h2-updatepro The “25H2” in domain names is deliberate. It mimics the naming convention Microsoft uses for Windows releases—24H2,  » Read More
