A captain with the Des Moines Fire Department was terminated from his job this summer after posting Facebook comments suggesting a co-worker had an interest in gay pornography. State records indicate David Bernal last worked for the city on June 16, 2023, when he was fired. He had worked for the Fire Department for more than 30 years. The records indicate that in 2021, while serving as a captain, Bernal was demoted from that position to the position of fire engineer due to a series of actions the city found to be in violation of the policies dealing with ethics, violence prevention and business conduct. Bernal’s actions included a comment about sheets being used for a “meeting” of some kind; a punching bag he brought to work that had faces of a white person and a Black person; and Bernal going unannounced to the home of an off-duty worker to discuss the comment about sheets being in a meeting. State records do not clarify the references to sheets. At the time, Bernal was given a “last chance warning” as part of his discipline.  » Read More

Daniel Tenner, who lured a woman to Terrytown with an advertisement to sell a smartphone, only to rob and kill her upon arrival, was sentenced Friday to life plus 139 years in prison by a judge who said, "This is as bad as it gets." Tenner used a woman friend's Facebook account to post the ad on the platform's marketplace. Morgan Tyrone, 24, of Pascagoula, Mississippi, drove in April 10, 2022, to buy the phone for $300, along with her partner and their 1-year-old child. In the 300 block of Friedrichs Road, Tyrone shot her in the head, took her $300 and left. A jury convicted him Aug. 15 of first-degree murder, armed robbery and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, so Judge Donald "Chick" Foret of the 24th Judicial District Court was left to sentence Teener to life in prison for the murder. He added the maximums 99 years for armed robbery and 40 years for obstruction of justice, and told Tenner he wished he make it a longer sentence.  » Read More

Meta's COVID-19 policies may appear effective in eradicating misinformation about this health issue, but the latest study suggests that it's not what it looks like. With the prevalence of anti-vaxxers who promote COVID myths and unsafe practices on how to prevent getting infected, Facebook needs to deploy stronger methods to address this concern. COVID-19 Misinformation Still Bypasses Facebook's Policies (Photo: Mufid Majnun from Unsplash)According to a new study, Meta's way of handling COVID-19 content on Facebook may not have been effective as anti-vaxxers only find a way to dodge the restrictions. The tireless battle against harmful misinformation online remains an exhausting yet critical task. But the lingering question is, did these endeavors yield the desired results? A recent study, published in Science Advances, casts doubt on the efficacy of Meta's Covid-19 policies.  While Meta's decision to remove certain content did lead to a decrease in overall anti-vaccine content on Facebook,  » Read More
