Ventura County’s Downtown Oxnard Named Among California’s Newest Cultural Districts

In a notable recognition of Ventura County’s cultural diversity, the California Arts Council (CAC) has named Downtown Oxnard as one of California’s newest state-designated cultural districts. On December 12, 2025, the CAC announced 10 new cultural districts in California. The CAC-administered program supports “vibrant, inclusive creative economies,” according to its website. The cultural districts “amplify the program and expand the original cohort” established in 2017, further representing the “creativity, diversity, and unique artistic identities of communities” across California, the CAC said. Considered the charm of “Old Town Oxnard,” downtown Oxnard hosts a thriving cultural arts community, including the Carnegie Art Museum, Heritage Square, Historic Plaza Park, and Plaza Stadium Cinemas, according to the Downtown Oxnard website. The recognition “shines a spotlight on the artists, small businesses, nonprofits, culture bearers, and residents who bring Downtown Oxnard to life every day,” Visit Oxnard said in a social media post on December 16, 2025. Taco restaurant closes its doors for good after 12 years serving Chattanooga’s Northshore

by Sam Talley Fri, December 26, 2025 at 8:46 PM Updated Fri, December 26, 2025 at 10:33 PM A restaurant on Chattanooga's Northshore has closed its doors for good. According to a Facebook post from the restaurant, Taconooga shut down on Dec. 26. The announcement comes nearly 12 years after the restaurant's grand opening, which was in March of 2014. Taconooga is in the same building on Frazier Avenue where a deadly weekend crash took place back in 2023. That wreck led to a significant safety overhaul last year, including changes to the sidewalks and a center turning lane. The restaurant is also within walking distance of the Walnut Street Bridge. The historic and popular walking bridge linking Chattanooga's downtown and its North Shore closed back in March for an estimated 18 months. The social media post did not specify a reason for Taconooga's shut down.  » Read More

HUGS AND SLUGS: Only crumbs left at the Cookie Walk | Nelson Star

Published 2:00 pm Wednesday, December 24, 2025 HUGS: To the staff at SK Electronics. I brought my pressure cooker to replace a fried electric cord. They put in a much more sturdy cable connection and recommended that I find an old computer plug-in rather than buy a new one from them! Local sustainability at its best! HUGS: To all the emergency hospital nurses, doctors and Mike who got out of bed for late night X-rays when I came in after a tumble down a flight of stairs. Your kindness and care did not go unnoticed. SLUGS: To Nelson Hydro for continuing to raise rural basic surcharge electrical rates. Taghum is closer to the generator than Nelson. HUGS: A great big hug, because I know you’re going to need it, to all the self-entitled people and their dogs who think the Kokanee provincial campground is a dog park. It most certainly is not and your dog most certainly should be on a leash. I know you can do it! Here’s a hug for encouragement.  » Read More

I spent the better part of the year gallivanting around the state as part of our still pretty new Destinations coverage. I also got into plenty of hijinks while I was off the clock. So, to close the year, here’s a look back at the places I loved visiting the most in 2025. Hopefully, it can give you some inspiration for where to go in 2026.My 27 favorite places I visited in Massachusetts this year Intersections, an art installation by Anila Quayyum Agha, at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem.(Nick O'Malley/MassLive)1) Peabody Essex Museum, Salem I had to go see the floating cube. That was the thought I had when I saw posts of the “Intersections” art installation popping up on social media. You can find it in Salem at the Peabody Essex Museum,  » Read More
