by: Sarah Fearing Posted: Nov 22, 2021 / 11:14 PM EST / Updated: Nov 22, 2021 / 11:14 PM EST NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — T’is the season for holiday cheer — but it’s also the season for scammers to try to take advantage of unsuspecting people. The Norfolk Botanical Garden is warning people to be careful where they buy tickets for this year’s holiday Million Bulb Walk. The botanical garden posted on Facebook Friday night saying some people have posted on Facebook attempting to offer or sell their unused tickets for the Million Bulb Walk. “Unfortunately, we had a family who purchased FAKE tickets which were invalid over the weekend,” the post said. The botanical garden advised people to only purchase tickets through the garden’s official website. Purchasing tickets there allows them to secure and track attendees’ payments and tickets. Tickets for the event went on sale on October 1 and can be purchased online. Those wanting to buy tickets in person will be charged an additional $5 walk-up fee.  » Read More

Meta is delaying end-to-end encryption for Facebook Messenger and Instagram until 2023 …

Meta’s plans to fully encrypt Messenger and Instagram have been delayed until 2023. The company was supposed to release the feature early next year. End-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram was announced along with the merger of the two apps. Meta (formerly Facebook) had announced back in 2019 its plans to offer a unified messaging system with privacy in mind. The first part of the plan is in action but the second part might take more time. Facebook Messenger and Instagram as part of this plan were supposed to get end-to-end encryption by default but it won’t happen at least until 2023, according to a report by The Guardian. End-to-end encryption for Facebook Messenger and Instagram was earlier planned for “sometime in 2022 at the earliest”, according to a blog post by Meta. But the company is now delaying this feature to 2023. “We’re taking our time to get this right and we don’t plan to finish the global rollout of end-to-end encryption by default across all our messaging services until sometime in 2023,” Antigone Davis,  » Read More

Encrypted Facebook messaging rollout will not be completed until 2023, says owner – Wales Online

The rollout of encrypted messaging will not be completed until some point in 2023, Facebook’s owner has said, after fears such a move could put children at greater risk of exploitation and abuse. Meta, which owns the social networking giant as well as the messaging service WhatsApp, said it is taking time to “get this right” and pledged to work to strike a balance between privacy and safety online. End-to-end encryption hides messages from everyone except those in a conversation, and has previously sparked warnings that it threatens children’s safety online. Antigone Davis, the boss of safety at Meta, said it would keep working with experts to tackle abuse, but insisted that in previous cases the firm was still in a position to help authorities despite services being encrypted. Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, she said: “Our recent review of some historic cases showed that we would still have been able to provide critical information to the authorities, even if those services had been end-to-end encrypted. “While no systems are perfect,  » Read More

Facebook Develops New AI Model that Can Anticipate Future Actions – InfoQ

Facebook unveiled its latest machine-learning process called Anticipative Video Transformer (AVT), which is able to predict future actions by using visual interpretation. AVT works as an end-to-end attention-based model for action anticipation in videos. The new model is based on recent breakthroughs in transformer architectures, particularly for natural language processing, and picture modeling for applications ranging from self-driving cars to augmented reality. AVT analyzes an activity to show the potential result specially for AR and the metaverse. Facebook plans for its metaverse apps to work across other platforms and hardware, through APIs that allow programs to talk to each other. Anticipating future activities is a difficult issue for AI since it necessitates both predicting the multimodal distribution of future activities and modelling the course of previous actions. AVT is attention based, so it can process a full sequence in parallel, while recurrent-neural-network-based approaches often forget the past, as they need to process sequences sequentially.  » Read More
