Moderna Announces Strategy to Address Omicron (B.1.1.529) SARS-CoV-2 Variant | Business Wire

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Moderna, Inc., (Nasdaq: MRNA) a biotechnology company pioneering messenger RNA (mRNA) therapeutics and vaccines, today announced updates to its strategy to address SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, given the emergence of the B.1.1.529 (Omicron) variant. The recently described Omicron variant includes mutations seen in the Delta variant that are believed to increase transmissibility and mutations seen in the Beta and Delta variants that are believed to promote immune escape. The combination of mutations represents a significant potential risk to accelerate the waning of natural and vaccine-induced immunity. A booster dose of an authorized vaccine represents the only currently available strategy for boosting waning immunity. The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine (mRNA-1273) is authorized as a booster for many populations at the 50 µg dose level. The Company is working rapidly to test the ability of the current vaccine dose to neutralize the Omicron variant and data is expected in the coming weeks. Since early 2021, Moderna has advanced a comprehensive strategy to anticipate new variants of concern. This strategy includes three levels of response should the currently authorized 50 µg booster dose of mRNA-1273 prove insufficient to boost waning immunity against the Omicron variant.  » Read More

EU to Limit Political Advertisements Online; Facebook, Google to Face Fine if They Don't …

Concerned by the misuse of political advertising to undermine elections, the European Union on Thursday unveiled plans to help people better understand when they are seeing such advertisements online and who is responsible for them. The proposals, aimed at ensuring fair and transparent polls or referendums, would also ban political targeting and “amplification techniques” used to reach a wider audience if they use sensitive personal data like ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation without a citizen's permission.“Digital advertising for political purposes is becoming an unchecked race of dirty and opaque methods,” European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova said. “A myriad of data analytics and communication firms work daily with our data to try to figure out the best way to convince us to buy something or vote for someone or not to vote at all."She said people “must know why they are seeing an advertisement, who paid for it, how much, what micro-targeting criteria were used. New technologies should be tools for emancipation, not for manipulation."The commission, the EU's executive branch,  » Read More

Pritzker leading in Facebook spending with ads appearing as news – Cities 92.9

(The Center Square) – It’s not fake news, but social media ads funded by Gov. J.B. Pritzker could still fool some users. Illinois gubernatorial candidates are expected to use traditional media like TV and radio to get their message out. But, millions have already been spent on social media outlets such as Facebook, mostly by Pritzker. Since 2018, a Facebook page for “JB Pritzker” has spent more than $3.6 million on ads, $271,000 of which Facebook notes ran without a disclaimer. Reform For Illinois Executive Director Alisa Kaplan said there is additional spending. “Social media, in particular, can be a little deceptive in how ads are presented,” Kaplan said. “Some of the Pritzker ads for example are presented as news pieces.” One such ad from a Facebook page called “Illinois Daily” that ran an ad between Nov. 1 and Nov. 21 links to a Chicago Tribune article from March 26 with a quote pulled saying Pritzker has “been widely praised by political observers, public health experts and leaders in both parties for his efforts to mitigate the COVID-19 crisis.” Facebook data shows up to $20,000 was spent on the ad with the disclaimer “Paid for by JB for Governor,” making…
