Newsmax's $25K Trump Facebook Ad Boosted Fossella's Staten Island Borough President Bid

Ex-Rep. Vito Fossella’s last-minute, game-changing endorsement from former President Donald Trump in the Staten Island borough president GOP primary got a paid, targeted Facebook boost from an unexpected source: conservative cable news outlet Newsmax. Like many other news organizations, Newsmax Media Inc. regularly spends money to promote its stories on the social media platform. But Newsmax’s $25,000 expenditure for its piece touting the Trump endorsement in the local race stood out, given that it was the only of the cable outfit’s 54 ad buys last month that targeted a single state — New York — leading up to the city’s June 22 primary election. Newsmax’s paid promotion for its story about Fossella, a former City Council and Congress member who once hosted a political reality show on the channel, doesn’t need to be reported to the city Campaign Finance Board, an agency spokesperson said. “It’s such a big loophole to drive through,” said Richard Flanagan, a professor of political science at CUNY’s College of Staten Island. “But it sure is funny business,  » Read More

Facebook's court win could end up leading to big trouble for Big Tech

The “Ending Platform Monopolies Act” would make it illegal for a dominant platform (Amazon or Apple are the most obvious) from creating their own products or services to compete with competitors using their platforms. Amazon, for instance, has private-label products that compete with third parties within Amazon Marketplace.Another proposed bill would give consumers more control over the use and transportability of their data. The fate of the bills is uncertain. While both Democrats and Republicans are committed to crackdowns on Big Tech, it’s for very different reasons.China’s crackdown on its large tech companies appears partly driven by a desire to heading off the threat of their rapidly increasing power and influence to the Communist Party stranglehold on everything of significance that happens within China but also by concerns about their impact on financial stability and data privacy. Credit:APThe Democrats see Big Tech’s dominance in conventional competition policy terms – the companies are too big and use their market power to engage in anti-competitive conduct – while the Republicans want to punish the big social media companies for their alleged censorship of conservative speech.  » Read More
