What the Tech: Yes, that Facebook settlement email is real – WRDW

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - If an email suddenly appears in your inbox saying a company owes you money, your first instinct should be to assume it’s a scam. Honestly, that’s still good advice. That’s why millions of Americans have been suspicious after receiving an email about Facebook’s $725 million privacy lawsuit settlement. The emails, which began arriving last week, notify some users that they’re eligible for a second payment from the settlement. The settlement is real. But this is also exactly the type of email scammers love to imitate. Why Are People Receiving Another Payment? This isn’t a new lawsuit. Facebook agreed to a $725 million settlement in 2022 over allegations involving user privacy. People who submitted claims by the August 2023 deadline already received their first payments. Now, leftover money from people who never cashed their original checks is being redistributed. If you receive a legitimate email, it likely means you: Submitted a valid claim in 2023 Received your original payment Successfully cashed or deposited that payment About 28 million people filed claims,  » Read More

Facebook Group Grows Into Multimillion-Dollar Black Business Hub In Evanston, Illinois

A Facebook group entitled ‘The Aux’ launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to promote Black-owned businesses has grown into a multimillion-dollar commercial hub that now houses entrepreneurs, wellness providers, and community organizations in Evanston, Illinois, Patch reports. The Aux, located at 2223 Washington St. in Illinois, emerged from the “Boosting Black Business” Facebook group created in 2020 by Evanston Police Sgt. Tosha Wilson. According to Wilson, the online network evolved into a physical marketplace designed to create opportunities for Black business owners and expand access to services within the community. The project’s growth shows how the development evolved from a grassroots initiative into a large-scale investment in local entrepreneurship. Wilson said the project required years of fundraising and community support. “This was a $10 million project, and we raised 8 million on our own,” Wilson told the outlet. “We were everywhere saying this is good for the community, and so far it has been great for the community.” Today, The Aux serves as home to several Black- and women-owned businesses operating under one roof.  » Read More

Williamson County couple launches Facebook group to connect same-sex families in Middle …

WILLIAMSON CO. , Tenn. (WSMV) - A Williamson County same-sex couple said a Facebook post helped them find the kind of community they had been searching for in Middle Tennessee. Jason and Greg Warren, educators who run the online teaching platform “The Kindergarten Smorgasbord,” are raising two daughters, 7-year-old Adelynn and 6-month-old Violet. They said they feel welcomed where they live but do not often see other families like theirs nearby. “None of our friends have families like ours. They’re couples, but they don’t have any kids,” Jason Warren said. He said most families in their neighborhood are heterosexual, though the couple said neighbors have been supportive. “There’s not other same-sex families that live near us,” he said. “Our community is 100% all straight families, but they all welcome us here.” Wanting their children to see other families like theirs, Jason Warren posted in a local Facebook group asking people to reach out if they knew of other same-sex families. The response, he said, was unexpectedly positive.  » Read More
