The arrest of an American man who told authorities his wife fell overboard while on a dinghy in rough waters in the Bahamas has brought greater scrutiny to his account of what happened as the search for her enters a fifth day. Brian Hooker was arrested by the Royal Bahamas Police Force on Wednesday in connection with the disappearance of 55-year-old Lynette Hooker, his lawyer confirmed to CNN. He was arrested “for additional questioning based on some probable cause we have,” Royal Bahamas Police Force Assistant Commissioner Advardo Dames told Reuters. He was taken into custody as a suspect, Dames said, though no charges have been announced. Brian Hooker “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing” in his wife’s disappearance, his attorney, Terrel Butler, said in a statement. “He has been cooperating with the relevant authorities as part of an ongoing investigation.” The Michigan couple, both US nationals, have been sailing together for more than a decade, documenting their life at sea across social media. And then someone on the inside writes a script to steal your private photos anyway. That’s what a former Meta employee based in London is under criminal investigation for. He allegedly downloaded around 30,000 private images belonging to Facebook users. The Metropolitan Police’s cybercrime unit is handling the case. According to court papers, the accused didn’t just browse around; he built a custom script designed to circumvent Meta’s internal detection systems. Meta says it discovered the breach over a year ago, fired the individual, notified affected users, and referred the matter to UK law enforcement. The suspect is currently on police bail and must report to officers in May. Meta’s track record on data protection is far from spotless. The staff member is said to have developed a programme which allowed him to circumvent Meta’s internal security controls to access and download users images.  The Metropolitan Police Cybercrime unit has launched an investigation into the incident which is being termed a mass invasion of Facebook users’ privacy. Speaking about the case, Meta confirmed they were made aware of the situation over a year ago and the employee was dismissed. Upon learning about the alleged breach, Meta notified the police themselves and is cooperating with their investigations.  A Meta spokesperson commented: “Protecting user data is our top priority. “After discovering improper access by an employee over a year ago, we immediately terminated the individual, notified users, referred the matter to law enforcement and enhanced our security measures”. Though he does not specify what recent press he’s referring to, his statement comes days after a March 31 Rolling Stone feature on his band that quotes Pineda sharing that he almost didn’t join Journey on their current farewell tour. A former worker at Meta is being investigated by police over suspicions he downloaded about 30,000 private Facebook images. The engineer is alleged to have designed a programme to access the pictures while avoiding internal security checks, UK court documents show. A specialist detective from the Metropolitan Police's cybercrime unit is investigating. Meta confirmed the suspected breach was discovered more than a year ago and said it referred the matter to police itself. It said affected users had been notified and the worker was sacked. Its security systems have also been upgraded. The engineer, who lives in London, is on bail while the investigation continues.
