A decorated Marine veteran was fatally shot at his home during a Facebook Marketplace sale — and he spent his final moments describing his attackers to police over the phone before heartbreakingly texting his family goodbye. Michael Ryan Burke, 42, was gunned down during a sale-turned-robbery involving a cellphone at his home in Columbia, Missouri on Sunday, according to the Columbia Police Department. Alex Hoang is the general manager for two businesses in the capital, Pho Viet Street Food and Velvet Nail Room. On 14 January he was notified that the Instagram and Facebook accounts were locked due to sexual content on his page which he completely rejected. Hoang immediately appealed which resulted in Meta services saying he was permanently banned. He told RNZ after he was not getting anywhere with the normal process of escalating these issues, he contacted an email address that was not public after seeing an influencer use it who had similar problems. Following that the ban was reversed on Saturday. Hoang said his businesses relied social media a lot. "Social media is really important for those businesses as it is a channel for us to communicate with customers." He estimated the two businesses were losing between $1000-$2000 per day.  » Read More

Des Moines police have identified an elderly woman who was found wandering outside in below-freezing temperatures early in the morning on Jan. 19. The Des Moines Police Department said in a news release that a member of the public provided a tip that helped officers identify the 78-year-old woman within 12 minutes of sharing her picture on social media. "Thank you to all who reached out to help!" the news release said. "Her medical care continues, and she is being reunited with her family." Police said in an earlier news release that officers found the woman on the 4100 block of East 29th Street just after 1 a.m. At the time, the temperature was 5 degrees, with a wind chill of 14 degrees below zero, police said. After police took the woman to the hospital, medical personnel determined that she had suffered a stroke, although they could not say whether the stroke happened recently or in the past.  » Read More

Addison Clegg, 24, of Meriden, was convicted this week of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, first-degree strangulation and several other crimes. NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — A Meriden man involved in a brazen crime that seriously injured a victim was convicted of five separate charges this week.   A jury found 24-year-old Addison Clegg guilty of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, first-degree strangulation, stealing a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm. The verdicts were returned on Jan. 12 in New Britain Superior Court, according to a report from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice. Prosecutors revealed during the trial that Clegg arranged a Facebook Marketplace transaction to exchange sneakers with the victim. Instead, Clegg strangled the victim to the point of unconsciousness so that another person could then steal the victim’s legally registered 9mm gun and his vehicle. The victim was then driven from the scene while unconscious. At some point during the ride, the victim regained consciousness and escaped from the moving vehicle by jumping out on Cromwell Avenue in Rocky Hill.  » Read More
