Egypt: Journalist Detained over Facebook Posts – Human Rights Watch

(Beirut) – Egyptian authorities detained prominent independent journalist Ismail Iskandarani over Facebook posts, Human Rights Watch said today. They should immediately and unconditionally release Iskandarani and establish an independent committee to review the detention of thousands of peaceful critics and release all those detained for peaceful speech, assembly, or association. According to his lawyers, security forces arrested Iskandarani on September 24, 2025, at a checkpoint in Matrouh governorate only two days after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi pardoned prominent activist Alaa Abdel Fattah and five others. Iskandarani was previously convicted in an unjust military trial over his journalistic work and subsequently served seven years in prison between 2015 and 2022. “Instead of using Alaa Abdel Fattah’s release as an opportunity to correct course, Egyptian authorities arbitrarily detained journalist Ismail Iskandarani after a lengthy Orwellian questioning over his Facebook posts,” said Amr Magdi, senior Middle East and North Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch. “This is a bellwether moment for the Egyptian government and the only way out of its protracted crisis is to stop unlawfully detaining critics and journalists and release all those arbitrarily detained.”  During the early hours of September 24,  » Read More

Caputo’s Facebook posts draw complaints to integrity commissioner – Sault Ste. Marie News

Recent social media activity by Ward 3 Coun. Angela Caputo has resulted in multiple complaints to the city's integrity commissioner. "I have been notified by the integrity commissioner that complaints have been filed in regards to my Facebook post regarding Charlie Kirk," Caputo confirmed to SooToday tonight. Caputo said she was advised of the complaints on Monday, Sept. 22. They followed this controversial post she made following the assassination of Kirk, a right-wing activist, on Sept. 10 in Orem, Utah: If you're now using your voice to advocate for Charlie Kirk (and ladies, if that's you, just know he would NEVER advocate for you and actually thought you were part of the world's problems if you worked outside of the home) and have never used it to speak out against any other type of gun violence or injustice, you're not speaking up for injustice, you're speaking for white supremacy, misogyny and racism. Whether you realize it or not, you find comfort in people like Charlie (white guys) being able to say whatever they want (hate speech) and have no consequence ("he's just speaking his truth").  » Read More

According to the affidavit, police say the victim explained that she was first sent a Facebook friend request from Yannitto, when she was in the 7th grade. Investigators learned that sometime after that initial social media interaction, Yannitto was reportedly hired as a substitute teacher at the school.
