A Northern Territory police sergeant with a history of racism publicly displayed an image linked to white supremacists as his Facebook cover photo for three years, only removing it last week after the ABC made inquiries. WARNING: This story contains racist and offensive language and the name of an Indigenous person who has died. Sergeant Lee Bauwens was the direct supervisor of former police constable Zachary Rolfe, who fatally shot 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker in the remote community of Yuendumu in 2019. The inquest that followed into Mr Walker's death revealed that Sergeant Bauwens shared attitudes with Mr Rolfe that were, in the words of the coroner, "plainly racist" and had "joined him in his use of racist language". Sergeant Bauwens denied in his evidence to the coroner that his team or its members were racist. Sergeant Bauwens uploaded the controversial Thin Blue Line flag as his Facebook cover image in February 2022, the day Mr Rolfe's murder trial began over the shooting death. Mr Rolfe was acquitted of all charges.  » Read More

Outside the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh on Aug. 11, Interim Supervisor John Ferretti raised concerns over a 17-year-old Facebook post attributed to his Democratic opponent, Joseph Scianablo. According to Ferretti, on Dec. 27, 2008, Scianablo posted, “i just shat myself while watching animal porn.” Ferretti said the comment was offensive and inappropriate, especially from someone seeking to lead a town that runs one of the largest animal shelters on Long Island. “As somebody who has fought for animal rights as a county legislator for the last eight years introducing legislation to protect animals, it's deeply disturbing that somebody who would want to run one of the largest animal shelters on Long Island would celebrate animal abuse,” Ferretti said. Scianablo, standing across the street with supporters and animal rights advocates, said the post was made by his brother and called the controversy a distraction. “We’re really sick and tired of career politicians spreading lies, disinformation, they’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel right here,” Scianablo said.  » Read More

While reading a recent article on Rai Al Youm titled 'What Does Facebook Really Know About You?', I was reminded of an incident years ago at our old radio workplace. A colleague claimed our phones could record conversations even when switched off. To prove it, he powered his device down, left the room, and asked us to talk freely. Upon returning, he restarted the phone — and to our surprise, our voices and images had been recorded. That moment was revealing. In today's hyper-digital world, surveillance technologies have grown remarkably sophisticated. We now carry devices that constantly monitor our activities and transmit our private lives to unseen parties. Chief among these tools is the smartphone — equipped with social media apps, GPS, cameras, and microphones — effectively turning every user into a traceable subject. Among the most pervasive digital platforms, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) have drawn particular scrutiny. The Rai Al Youm report focused on Facebook’s evolution from a social platform to a vast surveillance network, powered by advanced artificial intelligence capable of collecting,  » Read More
