IMAA Female Leaders of Tomorrow: LinkedIn's Lara Brownlow – Mediaweek

“Mentoring to me means having people in your corner who are genuinely invested in your success” Last month, the IMAA launched its Female Leaders of Tomorrow programme as part of its commitment to fostering long-term diversity and inclusivity across independent media agencies nationally.The six-month programme aims to create a support network between accomplished industry leaders and their mentees by matching senior staff with up-and-coming women in indie media agencies for knowledge-sharing and professional development opportunities.One of the IMAA mentors involved in the programme is Lara Brownlow, head of channel sales APAC at LinkedIn, who tells Mediaweek about the importance of mentorship in the industry.What’s the most important/best piece of advice you’ve received during your career“In the first few years of my career, working as a sales coordinator, I was paired with the magnificent Michelle Dooley, who taught me about the importance of understanding your customer’s business, asking the right questions, and becoming invaluable to your customers in the long term. Although it’s become increasingly common and acceptable for people to talk about mental health challenges on social media, potential employers may view job applicants in a negative light, according to new research released by North Carolina State University. In particular, posts about mental health on LinkedIn could introduce personal information into the recruiting, screening and hiring processes and affect applicants later. “Our findings don’t mean people should refrain from posting about anxiety and depression on LinkedIn,” Jenna McChesney, the first author and assistant professor of psychology at Meredith College, said in a statement. “However, people who are considering posting about these issues should be aware that doing so could change future employers’ perceptions of them.” For the study, the researchers recruited 409 professionals with hiring experience to review LinkedIn pages and give their impressions of an applicant’s personality traits and future work performance. Bangkok — Hate speech is becoming the new norm in Malaysia, says a media organization that monitored online posts during state elections this month. Based in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) set up teams to monitor social media sites over four weeks. Focusing on key areas of race, religion, royalty, gender, sexual orientation, and migration, the CIJ teams spent hours poring over activity from politicians, political parties, media outlets, government agencies and key opinion leaders. Their preliminary findings: Hate speech has become "normalized." One aspect the researchers saw consistently was offensive or discriminatory language being used, said CIJ Executive Director Wathshlah Naidu. "That is very worrying because we are now normalizing it, and by normalizing it there is a huge potential for it to escalate," Naidu told VOA. The month-long monitoring project "Say No To Hate Speech" began on July 24 as six Malaysian states geared up for elections. The vote was seen as a referendum on newly elected Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the strength of Malaysia's Islamic opposition.
