LinkedIn Inspires Love-Hate Relationships as Marketers Seek an Edge – DataDrivenInvestor

Valuable content helps business, even if algorithm is a mysteryPhoto by Souvik Banerjee on UnsplashLinkedIn has its strong points in the business world and evokes strong emotions among marketers. They tend to fall into two opposing camps: love or hate.Chaim Shapiro lives in both worlds at the same time.“LinkedIn is the best professional networking site, but the algorithm drives me insane,” he said. “It is impossible to know why LinkedIn favors some posts over others.“I also can not stand when people on LinkedIn ‘pitch slap’ — send a connection request followed by an immediate sales pitch,” Shapiro said. His obvious frustration is made doubly so because he is a true LinkedIn aficionado.“I’ll help you maximize LinkedIn,” Shapiro is proud to say. An author, public speaker, career coach and high-education professional, he also specializes in careers, LinkedIn tips and LinkedIn profiles.Clearly, Shapiro wants to be a fan, but LinkedIn, its algorithm and communities refuse to make it easy.Marketers Ivana Taylor and Iva Ignjatovic are similarly torn, although perhaps not as emotionally.Taylor owns DIYMarketers, “committed to helping small business owners get out of overwhelm.” Ignjatovic is a marketing, strategy and business consultant. With Shapiro, they talked about the pros and cons of using LinkedIn…

The Age of the Oversharing Boss – The New York Times

If you had told Ryan Caldbeck, in his first-ever job, that he would one day be crying to a room full of his employees, he might have simply told you — with the bluster characteristic of any corporate striver — that you were wrong. But somewhere in between tumultuous markets and shifting national conversations on mental health, Mr. Caldbeck’s perspective changed. In 2016, he laid off roughly 15 percent of his 45-person team at the financial technology company CircleUp, and broke down in tears. Now, he said, he shares his feelings with colleagues more openly. He also sometimes wrestles to find the line between buttoned-up executive reticence and oversharing.“There was a time when I went into work, and in a meeting we were going around the room saying how was your weekend, and I said, ‘Oh, I got in a difficult fight with my wife,’” said Mr. Caldbeck, 43, who was previously CircleUp’s chief executive. “Everyone’s mouth dropped. I realized I went too far. That wasn’t appropriate. That’s not how to show vulnerability at work.”Chief executives have long studied how to deliver good news and bad news. They’ve trained themselves to pitch big ideas and shoot down middling ones. Now they…

This is LinkedIn's biggest challenge in recent years – The Jerusalem Post

Approximately six months after LinkedIn's acquisition of Oribi and its announcement regarding the opening of an Israeli development center, several developments have occurred that could harm the rapid progress that has characterized LinkedIn in recent years. In February, LinkedIn announced that it would purchase Oribi for approximately $90 million and establish a research and development center in Tel Aviv. There was good reason to think that the development center would be completed at record speed and that Oribi would double or even triple the number of its employees. Unfortunately, that did not happen.Since that time, Israeli and high-tech companies around the world, including major corporations such as Google and Microsoft, have instituted hiring freezes and have even laid off workers. Oribi, the latest LinkedIn acquisition, has reduced its workforce by a third. The managers of LinkedIn and other giant companies are now facing an additional challenge. Employees are looking for work opportunities that do not have the constant threat of redundancy. LinkedIn also knows that had the timing of the Oribi acquisition been smoother,  there would have been fewer queries regarding the continuation of the development center project. The LinkedIn DilemmaThe current situation raises a new dilemma. Since Oribi's workforce has been reduced…

The subject was one of the main talking points at a meeting of the PGA Tour’s top players called and hosted by Mr. Woods on Tuesday to discuss the LIV threat and a plan of action. Part of the that plan was having the PGA Tour renounce its non-profit status which would result in the Tour paying taxes but giving it much more freedom in how it conducts business, including bringing in private investors and equity firms. According to the Fire Pit Collective, a golf news site, both Mr. Woods and Mr. McIlroy expressed their support for such a move. At the meeting held in Delaware, where the Wilmington Country Club is hosting the BMW Championship, the players also discussed plans for an 18 tournament series that would feature 60 of the top players playing for $20 million purses. The PGA Tour has already beefed up purses at many events in response to the LIV Series…
