On April 15, 2022 at about 12:50p.m., Central Precinct bicycle patrol officers were engaged in a focused patrol in Old Town when they observed Joe-Vonntae L. Sanders, 32, in the area of Northwest 9th Avenue and Northwest Lovejoy Street. They know Sanders had warrants for his arrest, that he may be armed with a gun, and has a history of running from and fighting with police. So officers coordinated an apprehension strategy. As they were moving in to contact Sanders, he fled on foot. While he was running, officers observed a handgun in one of his hands. He threw this gun in the back of a passing truck. Officers were able to coordinate and surround Sanders, and he surrendered to police. Officers recovered the loaded gun (photo) from the passing pickup truck and seized it as evidence. Sanders was transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center on his warrants.
