Is antitrust a remedy for Big Tech's suppression of speech?

A minidebate between Congressman Jim Jordan, Reason's Elizabeth Nolan Brown, and me Stewart Baker | 6.24.2021 5:26 PM My story about Linkedin suppressing one of my posts has acquired a sequel. Rep. Jim Jordan, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, recently accused Microsoft of being "out to get conservatives." In support of that claim, he pointed to LinkedIn's suppression of a short post of mine. In its entirety, it said, "The social media giants that won't let you say the 2020 election was rigged are the people who did their best to rig it: Hunter Biden laptop was genuine and scandalous—Daily Mail." Rep. Jordan's complaint is part of his campaign against a half-dozen bipartisan Judiciary Committee antitrust bills aimed at Big Tech. He thinks the bills give Microsoft a free ride and fail to address conservatives' objections to Silicon Valley suppression of their speech. He called on the company to "explain Microsoft's basis for censoring user content about Hunter Biden the origins of COVID-19" and to provide an accounting of LinkedIn content suppression decisions and standards in the last two years. The letter generated a dissent from Reason's Senior Editor, Elizabeth Nolan Brown, who criticized what she called…

Beyond saying that you care: Why your activism needs to extend further than your LinkedIn logo

Beyond saying that you care: Why your activism needs to extend further than your LinkedIn logo 24 June 2021 at 7:00 am Being an ethical brand is all the rage at the moment. But the truth is, it isn’t enough to just say you care – audiences will sniff out your slacktivism, writes Jo Scard, who says you should only align with causes you’re passionate about. This month, rainbow flags and words of allyship have dominated our social media channels. New corporate partnerships have been established, LinkedIn logos have been changed and brands around the world, from all kinds of industries, have stood in solidarity for LGBTQIA+ rights.  When you consider that consumers are much more likely to opt for socially and environmentally responsible brands, it isn’t hard to understand why organisations would make these kinds of moves. Recent times have seen a push towards brand purpose – people are caring about themes like sustainability and ethical decision making more than ever before. And similarly, marketers and PR specialists have spent the last decade capitalising on the digital economy and implementing innovative ways to position brands as activists, allies or advocates as a means to transition their audiences into consumers.  So while…

Improve your networking with social media

Like it or not, LinkedIn has become a valuable networking tool. We spoke to Sharon McCooey, head of LinkedIn Ireland, and Brian McFadden, founder and client services director at the Recruiters agency about how graduates can make the most of social media to get their careers going. What are the main social media tools for graduates? Brian McFadden: It’s more important for some graduates to have a digital footprint, particularly if it is in an outward facing role such as sales or marketing. In other roles, it may be less important but it does help employers to know if you are digital savvy, if you have accolades and recommendations and if you are an active online user. If you’re doing a more backroom role such as software engineering, Github and StackOverflow may be more important ways of showing your work. Why is LinkedIn an important tool now? Sharon McCooey: LinkedIn passed the milestone of one million members in 2013, doubled to two million members in 2019 and has continued to grow since. Our growth has been driven by multiple factors, not simply people finding job opportunities. Over the past year we’ve seen an increase in conversations on the platform and…

Rep. Jim Jordan questions Microsoft about company's 'bias against conservatives' as Congress …

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, has sent a letter to Microsoft, accusing the tech giant of being "out to get conservatives." The letter from Jordan comes as the House Judiciary Committee prepares to consider a series of antitrust bills that could force Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook to overhaul their business practices, according to CNBC. In his letter to Microsoft President Brad Smith, Jordan openly wondered why House Democrats did not include Microsoft in the list of companies for reform.  “Big Tech, including Microsoft, Inc., is out to get conservatives. Despite Microsoft’s size and market dominance, House Democrats curiously did not significantly examine Microsoft’s conduct during their investigation of competition in digital markets. Democrats also seem to have excluded Microsoft from scrutiny in their large package of bills to radically rewrite American antitrust law," Jordan wrote to Smith. Jordan accused Microsoft of taking "increasing aggressive editorial control over content on its platforms," citing that the company's Bing search engine has censored "Tank Man" results on the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests 'on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party." Jordan also believes Microsoft's LinkedIn is muzzling both Chinese…
