Tech giants shaping modern Irish offices – Iput's new LinkedIn development

Offices are in competition with employee homes, so new developments need to be comfortable, stimulating and enjoyable places to work, says the head of Iput, the biggest owner of offices in Dublin.  You won’t be able to lease buildings or value building unless you have these characteristics, says Iput CEO Niall Gaffney. He is standing in the one-acre Wilton Park along the grand canal, a stone’s throw from Baggot Street Bridge. Behind the Victorian park is a huge construction site which will house four new office blocks, totalling 600,000 sq ft for LinkedIn’s European HQ. The buildings will house around 5,000 people.

Mind the spooks lurking online

On Nov 20, 2017, Dickson Yeo, who was studying for a PhD at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, posted on his Facebook page: "Spooky people are trying to add me on LinkedIn." Elaborating, the Singaporean wrote that a "satanic archaeologist who curates 13th century artefacts from cult groups" was trying to add him as a contact. "I know I'm alternative in views. He trawled the professional networking site for contacts whom he - at the behest of his handlers from the People's Liberation Army and Ministry of State Security - could mine for classified information. And it felt almost like an addiction, he told United States law enforcement officers of the site and its relentless algorithm. No casting of spells - at least not in the mediaeval sense - or drinking of blood appears to have been involved in how Yeo got recruited, and…

Ask a Trainer: How Can I Build My Online Brand?

In this week’s Ask a Trainer guest post, Hannah Morgan offers insight into how trainers can build a strong online brand. Dear Hannah, I work as a trainer at a large financial services organization. I’m happy in my role and don’t have any immediate plans to leave, but I also don’t think this is a job I’ll have for the rest of my career. I want to make sure that I have a strong online brand, so I won’t be starting from square one whenever I decide to start job-hunting. Do you have any advice on how trainers can cultivate a strong online brand? I get so excited when I think about the possibilities for people when it comes to personal branding because every day, there seems to be a new kind of opportunity. People need to think of themselves as their own business. You want to make sure that you’ve got your story set and decide what you want people to know about you. I’m a resume hater. I hate resumes because people don’t write in real terms when they are writing their resumes. They use garbled language or buzz words like “work well independently” or “team player.” What…
