But applications like Linkedin have helped make the whole process of job hunting easier. As the application just completed its 18th birthday, we look at the role of the employment-oriented online service. Today, LinkedIn has 756 million members from more than 200 countries and territories worldwide using the platform. Carla Fried: Overdue from Uncle Sam and LinkedIn: Recognition of moms' sacrifices

It took a global pandemic that hit women especially hard to push LinkedIn to add one of the world’s toughest jobs to its list of career titles: stay-at-home mother.Users can now choose “self-employed” as a job description and not be required to add in the name of a business. LinkedIn is also working on adding other non-paying job descriptions, such as “parental leave” and “family care.”The federal government is also belatedly recognizing how hard the pandemic has been on working parents, forcing women out of the workplace at a far higher rate than men. While the best-known provision of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, signed into law in March, sends direct payments of $1,400 to lower-income households, the law also includes additional cash payments to support families with children.Starting this summer, millions of families with children younger than 18 are going to start receiving a monthly stipend of as much as $300 per child, delivered as a monthly check, not some obtuse benefit that you receive when you file your federal taxes. The child tax credit as a working mom lifelineThe federal child tax credit (CTC) has been around for years, but the American Rescue Plan gives it a complete…

LinkedIn Provides Tips on How to Maximize Career Resilience by Building Your LinkedIn Network

How important is your professional network in determining your future opportunities, and providing career resilience - which has become increasingly important over the past 12 months? To glean insight into this, LinkedIn recently analyzed a randomized sample of three million LinkedIn members from across the world, in order to determine how their LinkedIn connections and activity have facilitated job transitions and developments. LinkedIn's research focused the relationship between people's LinkedIn connection graph and career mobility - i.e. how quickly somebody moves into their next job.  Factoring in a range of variables, LinkedIn found that among users who share similar demographics, educational backgrounds and professional experience: Members with at least 13 connections from companies other than their current employer, are 22.9% faster in transitioning to their next job than those who do not. Members who are a part of at least one group on LinkedIn are 8.6% faster in transitioning to their next job than those who are not a member of any groups. Members who follow at least 5 organizations on LinkedIn are 7.1% faster in transitioning to their next job than those who do not. In some ways, this makes perfect sense - if you're more actively engaged in establishing…

5 perks of LinkedIn for undergraduate students

By Katie Peters – Co-Editor-in-Chief Exploring the Lasell University LinkedIn profile. Photo by Katie Peters Spending a significant amount of time and money getting a degree takes a lot of effort. Between late night study sessions and early morning classes, many students hope their work will pay off once they land a job in their field. Of the many ways students are able to showcase their skills, creating a LinkedIn profile is a great way to connect with others professionally, search for jobs and internships, and to create a public resume.  Connecting with Peers LinkedIn allows users to “connect” with other users, much like Facebook users “friend” other users. This is a good way to stay connected with peers, mentors, coworkers, and other connections on a professional level. Users can post their achievements, job opportunities at their company, and educational milestones for others to see. Having connections with people in the professional world can lead to training and job opportunities. Be conscious of who is connected, employers will be able to see a user’s common connections and interests.
