Biden's agency review teams include tech employees from companies like Amazon, Airbnb and Uber

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden arrives at the Queen Theater where later in the day he is scheduled to address the media about the Trump administration’s lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act on November 10, 2020 in Wilmington, Delaware. Joe Raedle | Getty Images President-elect Joe Biden has given few hints at how he would approach concerns around the tech industry but his transition agency review teams are filled with several tech employees -- as well as a few prominent advocates of reform. The transition team disclosed the members of its agency review groups on Tuesday. Most of the tech employees listed are serving as volunteers, which the transition website says means they are serving in a personal capacity. The site says its members' most recent employers are listed "for informational purposes only." Still, the few clues President-elect Joe Biden has offered into his thinking on tech policy issues has left the industry and government watchdogs scouring for hints. While Biden criticized Facebook's handling of misinformation and said their liability shield should be "revoked" in an interview with the New York Times editorial board published earlier this year, he's offered few specifics on how he'd handle key concerns for the industry like potential antitrust charges. Groups like the Revolving Door Project have urged the Biden team to avoid bringing on people with corporate conflicts of interest, including from the tech industry. Their fear stems from the days of the Obama administration, where tech alums seamlessly rotated through the White House. Progressive groups have made clear they believe that sort of makeup should not be repeated. Biden's administration will be tasked with handling several high-profile tech policy matters, including the Justice Department's antitrust lawsuit against Google, a potential Federal Trade Commission lawsuit against Facebook, questions about content moderation, gig worker rights…

5 Ways to Enhance Your Firm's LinkedIn Company Page

While lawyers and service professional staff are actively invested in their personal LinkedIn Profiles, many firms and organizations do not have Company Pages. Or, if they do have Pages, they are not maximized to their fullest potential. It is important that administrators actively update and highlight their firms’ accomplishments and directives on the firm’s Company Page. It is especially important now when our business communications and development are dependent on virtual conversations. A LinkedIn Company Page allows for product marketing, creates advancement in industry standards and trends, and provides a rich platform for business development and recruitment. 1. Designate an administrator to create and manage the firm’s Company Page It is a best practice to only have one administrator to manage a firm company page. The administrator works in the “admin view” to update permanent information such as contact information, practice areas and locations. Other temporary information including events, time-sensitive videos — and recent promotions also need to be revised consistently. The new section called Analytics shows the administrator the visitors and followers to the firm’s company page. 2. Attorneys and professional staff who work for the firm should be listed on the Company Page There will be a link “See all ____ employees on LinkedIn” and that allows for a more robust page which speaks to the firm culture. Firms should encourage all attorneys and professional staff to have a personal page and be connected to the company page. 3. The administrator should create content in an About section, showcasing attorneys and professional staff and promotions, anniversaries, and new hires The About section includes highlights of the firm and its internal culture, practice areas served, any firm initiatives and information on industry trends and benchmarks. Include photos of the firm and information about the people who represent the firm…

The biggest missed opportunity in digital advertising? Why brands need to get better at in-game …

In-app advertising remains one of the biggest unexploited opportunities in digital marketing, according to John Egan, head of demand at MoPub, a Twitter-owned ad exchange. He made the point during a video interview with The Drum, which sought to explain how in-app advertising is emerging as a key channel, which can help brands to become a more significant part of consumers' daily digital lives thanks to its demographic reach and significant time spend on the channel. "It's essentially playing a bigger role in a user's digital day," he said. “If you have a broad audience and a lot of people spending time on a particular channel, that’s a pretty strong foundation to work from,” he added.Mobile Consumption Accelerates Under Lockdown MoPub,which has a reach of over 1.5bn unique devices, has seen existing trends —such as the amount of time spent daily on mobile devices overtaking time spent watching television — accelerate during 2020 thanks to lockdown media consumption habits. Mobile gaming downloads reached their highest ever levels during the first week of April as lockdowns across the globe took hold (The Drum, 2020), furthering the case for marketers to consider mobile gaming as a channel.“This year, a lot of the trends we saw slowly bubbling up over time really accelerated as we all began working from home,” Egan said. “In the past, we saw a slow and steady amount of time being spent on mobile devices and it had just eclipsed TV. But as lockdown came in, the amount of time spent in-app on mobile accelerated, as people started spending more time at home. It seemed to us that people were turning to mobile devices to stay informed, to stay connected, and to be entertained. That has remained the case throughout the course of this year.” Mobile Gaming Remains Largely UntappedMoPub…

Attack Surface Analysis of 3 Social Media Giants

Cybercrime is first and foremost financially motivated. Cybercriminals look for lucrative targets, including social media networks with hundreds of millions of monthly active users. We put this perspective to the test by analyzing the domain attack surface of three of today's largest social media platforms. In total, our Attack Surface Management (ASM) Solutions found 22,785 subdomains that could be used as attack vectors, as they contain the strings "linkedin," "youtube," and "facebook." We analyzed this data and present our main findings in this post. Legitimate versus Suspicious Ownership One of the first steps in an attack surface analysis is to distinguish between domains that are under the organization's control and those that are not. For this study, we ran the 22,785 subdomains on a bulk WHOIS lookup tool to see if there are records that match the WHOIS details of Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Registrant NameNumber of Domains FoundPercentage of the Total Number of SubdomainsOthers22,74699.83%Google LLC (YouTube)360.16%Facebook, Inc.30.01%LinkedIn Corporation00% We found that only 39 domains were owned by the social media companies, comprising only 0.17% of the whole sample size. That means that only a small number of the subdomains are owned and under the control of the social media giants. The rest may be used by other entities as they please, which could be a problem, as they make use of the companies' brand names. Terms Appearing alongside the Brand Names Alongside the brand names, we found that about 20% of the subdomains in our sample contain the word "blog." Some also contained other text strings that could be used to lure social media users into clicking a link or downloading an email attachment. Terms such as "download," "login," "signin," and "free" could make message recipients think a subdomain is legitimate. The terms "advert," "advertise," or "advertising," on the…

No social media is safe: How election misinformation spread on LinkedIn, Pinterest and Nextdoor

Pinterest, LinkedIn and other smaller social media sites have again been forced into the war against misinformation this election cycle, showing the challenges of policing the spread of lies online. On image bookmarking-site Pinterest, researchers found a search for the phrase “stolen ballots” uncovered posts promoting baseless claims about the vote-counting process. On LinkedIn, the business-focused social network, users shared articles and videos that pushed false claims about the election results. And on neighborhood-focused social media site Nextdoor, users reported false claims of voter fraud in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Those social networks have long struggled with the misinformation runoff from bigger rivals, like Facebook and Twitter, who have worked to stifle the spread of election disinformation on their sites. Those tech giants have spent months preparing for this period, marshaling tens of thousands of content moderators to slap labels on posts, hide tweets and even shutting off political ads.The more misinformation circulates on the large social networks, the more it trickles down to the smaller sites better known for posting wedding photos, connecting with potential employers and complaining about a neighbor’s dog.“Of course, the Internet is a space without borders, and that means the conspiracy theories and propaganda and misinformation does not remain static across platforms,” said Samuel Woolley, a professor and director of a propaganda research team at the University of Texas at Austin. It’s not the first time. In the lead-up to the 2016 election, Pinterest became a repository for thousands of political posts created by Russian operatives. Pinterest was one of the first social media companies to decisively crack down on anti-vaccine disinformation in 2019, and it expanded policies to prohibit voting misinformation this year. LinkedIn last year started releasing reports of its content moderation practices, where it detailed that it was removing fake accounts, spam job postings, harassment and…
