In a recent LinkedIn report titled “LinkedIn Cities on the Rise 2025: The 25 fastest-growing U.S. metros for jobs and new talent,” the Omaha metro area ranked 10th in the nation. The latest analysis continues the trend of Omaha and Lincoln topping national rankings of attractive cities fulfilling the needs of the current workforce.  According to LinkedIn, its inaugural Cities on the Rise report resulted from analyzing LinkedIn’s labor market data on where LinkedIn members were moving, as well as data on year-over-year growth in job openings and hirings by location. The research focused specifically on U.S. metropolitan areas with less than 2.5 million LinkedIn members. You can read an explanation on the methodology here. Justin Pinkerman, a spokesman for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, supported the findings, highlighting in an email to SPN additional rankings compiled recently by other organizations and companies. UC Riverside recently welcomed dignitaries from more than 21 countries as part of a visit by the Los Angeles Consular Corps showcasing the campus’s growing role in global research, innovation, and economic development. The July 17 visit, organized by UCR’s Office of Research and Economic Development, or RED, brought together consular representatives, regional officials, faculty, and international business leaders. Los Angeles Consular Corps Dean Zaib Shaikh, Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson, and Riverside City Councilmember Steven Robillard were among the attendees. The convening worked to strengthen international partnerships, promote foreign investment, and to advance UCR’s role in making Southern California a rising hub for global innovation. “UC Riverside is uniquely positioned to foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government on an international scale,” said Rodolfo Torres, UCR’s vice chancellor for research and economic development. “This visit reflects our commitment to connecting our region with global opportunities.”The day included discussions on how universities can anchor innovation and serve as gateways for international companies seeking to expand into the U.S. market. In ecosystems around the world, fungi play crucial roles in supporting plant life. Their ability to form connections between plant roots can enhance water and nutrient uptake and promote plant growth. While fungal symbioses have been extensively explored in the past, some researchers believe these underground networks may be far more complex than they seem. Most studies on plant-fungal interactions focus on mycorrhizal fungi, which are famous for constructing nutrient-sharing pathways. However, a new experiment designed by NAU scientists suggests an often-overlooked fungal group—dark septate endophytes (DSEs)—may be capable of something similar to their more popular counterparts: linking the roots of neighboring plants to facilitate water sharing and boost their host’s biomass. DSEs may even be responsible for keeping plant networks alive in some of the Southwest’s most drought-prone areas.
