Read moreDetailsLast week, CNN political commentator Scott Jennings posted an attack video against leftist streamer Hasan Piker, leveraging it as a way to undermine Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who campaigned with Piker in Michigan. Jennings’ video featured a series of clips taken from Piker’s popular Twitch livestreams, including one where Piker said “Go back to a better time, when lynchings were happening.” Sounds pretty bad, right? Jennings certainly thought so. He urged “every Black voter” to listen and consider joining the Republican Party, to fight back against the racist rhetoric Piker was using. Here’s the issue: Piker wasn’t calling for lynchings against Black people. He was sarcastically mocking a clip featuring a Black Republican who was calling for the end of so-called “woke” district attorneys. This kind of smear tactic has become a relentless cycle for Piker and the progressive candidates he has supported, who have often gone on to great success (just look at Zohran Mamdani ). An opponent—from Republicans like Jennings to alt-right Twitch streamers to establishment Democrats—clips Piker out-of-context, recycles his old controversies (like saying America “deserved” 9/11, which he has long since apologized for), and makes bold insinuations about everything from his clothing choices to his

Summer’s slower pace gives way to fuller calendars, and suddenly our communities are buzzing with activity once again. Our Fall/Back-to-School issues have become my favorites to publish. This year, we’ve truly hit the jackpot with three incredible cover stories featuring remarkable alumni whose talent, determination, and hometown pride continue to inspire us. For Inside Armonk, you’ll meet three Byram Hills graduates who are carrying on the family legacy at Zaro’s Family Bakery. Their compelling story is beautifully told by Ella Ilan and getting to know the Zaro brothers–and their proud father, Stuart–was one of the highlights of my summer. Our Inside Chappaqua cover story shines a spotlight on Olympic gold medalist Aerin Frankel. We were honored to meet the skilled, fierce, kind, and humble goalie for the USA Women’s Olympic Hockey Team, whose remarkable journey is beautifully captured by Inside Press writer Stacey Pfeffer. For decades, vocalists harnessing virtuosic technique and the conviction and training of the Black church defined R&B just as much as the genre’s generational love songs and everlasting blues ballads (think the dizzying melisma or extended belts of the ’90s). But at the turn of the 2010s, a murkier, more ethereal take on the genre emerged that bridged the traditional songwriting machine with access-widening internet hubs like Tumblr and SoundCloud. Led by the likes of Frank Ocean, Jhené Aiko, The Weeknd and Miguel, this new generation of artists began to push R&B into a space that, at least temporarily, seemed to deprioritize more flamboyant displays of vocal prowess in favor of vocal tone and lyrical relatability. As offshoots like alternative R&B, trap soul and vibe&B have relegated traditional R&B vocal stylings to the back burner, fans have noticed. A week doesn’t go by without some kind of online debate over the general state of vocal ability; quasi viral moments like Chaka Khan’s July 20 COLORS appearance — where the R&B legend bellowed a triumphant rendition of her classic “Through the Fire” — attract
