Man jailed after sending sexual images to child he met on Snapchat – Nation.Cymru

Ashley John. Photo South Wales Police Nation.Cymru staff A man from Neath Port Talbot has been jailed for almost four years after sending explicit images of himself to someone he believed was a 12-year-old girl. Ashley John, 26, of Gwaun Cae Gurwen, used Snapchat in October 2024 to contact a profile he thought belonged to a child. During their exchanges, John claimed to be a 17-year-old sheep farmer, before sending indecent images of himself and requesting sexual images in return. He was charged with attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause or incite a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to cause a child under 13 to look at an image of sexual activity. Having initially denied all three offences, John changed his plea to guilty on 6 July. He was sentenced to three years and ten months in prison. Detective Inspector Hannah Millership said the case underlined the dangers children face online. “This sentence reflects the serious risk that sexual communication poses to children and their safety and well-being,” she said. “We will continue to pursue those who seek to exploit children online and take action to protect vulnerable young

US court rules Meta, other tech firms must face thousands of lawsuits over social media addiction

WASHINGTON — A U.S. appeals court on Monday allowed thousands of lawsuits to move forward against Meta Platforms, Alphabet's Google, ByteDance's TikTok and Snap Inc's Snapchat over claims they designed their products to be addictive to young users. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected an appeal by Meta and TikTok seeking to overturn a lower court ruling requiring them to face more than 3,000 lawsuits filed in federal court, saying the companies had appealed too ‌early. The companies had argued that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 — which generally shields online companies from claims over content posted by their users — also bars lawsuits claiming they failed to warn the public about the addictive nature of their platforms. Most appeals come after a case has concluded with a ruling or a verdict. The companies contended that they should not have to wait until the litigation ends to challenge the lower court's rejection of their immunity defense. But the 9th Circuit said Section ‌230 provides a defense to liability, not ‌immunity from lawsuits, so the appeal was premature. Meta loses bid to delay intrastate trial The court also denied Meta's bid to postpone

Rogers Makes False 9/11 Claim About El-Sayed – FactCheck.org

Republican Mike Rogers has provided no evidence that Democrat Abdul El-Sayed “believes that America deserved 9/11,” as Rogers falsely claimed in a statement this month. Instead Rogers’ Senate campaign has pointed to past comments made by a liberal political commentator. El-Sayed said in April that the 2001 terrorist attack on the U.S. was not justified. Rogers released the statement attacking El-Sayed, who is Muslim, after El-Sayed won the Aug. 4 Democratic primary in the race for Michigan’s open Senate seat. El-Sayed, a former Detroit public health official, will now face Rogers, the Republican nominee and a former congressman, in the general election. Among other claims, the Aug. 5 statement released by Rogers, an Army veteran who chaired the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said, “I spent years hunting terrorists and bringing Osama bin Laden to justice. Never in a million years did I think that I would be running against someone who believes America deserved 9/11.” The Rogers campaign has not responded to our request for supporting evidence. But the campaign told PolitiFact
