The Github youtube-dl Takedown Isn't Just a Problem of American Law

The video downloading utility youtube-dl, like other large open source projects, accepts contributions from all around the globe. It is used practically wherever there's an Internet connection. It's especially shocking, therefore, when what looks like a domestic legal spat–involving a take-down demand written by lawyers representing the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA),  a U.S. industry group, to Github, a U.S. code hosting service, citing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a U.S. law–can rip a hole in that global development process and disrupt access for youtube-dl users around the world. Those outside the United States, long accustomed to arbitrary take-downs with "DMCA" in their subject line, might reasonably assume that the removal of youtube-dl from Github is yet another example of the American rightsholders' grip on U.S. copyright law. Tragically for Internet users everywhere, the RIAA was not citing DMCA Section 512, the usual takedown route, but DMCA Section 1201, the ban on breaking digital locks. And the failures of that part of American law that can allow a rightsholder to intimidate an American company into an act of global censorship are coded into more than just the U.S. legal system. The RIAA's letter against youtube-dl cites the DMCA 1201's criminalization of the distribution of technology that can bypass DRM: what’s called the “circumvention of technical protection measures”. It also mentions German law, which contains similar language. Here's the core of the relevant U.S. statute, in 1201(b):  1201 (b) Additional Violations.— No person shall manufacture, import, offer to the public, provide, or otherwise traffic in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof, that— is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing protection afforded by a technological measure that effectively protects a right of a copyright owner under this title in a work or a portion…

Election-Themed Nail Art Is Taking Over Instagram & These Celebrities Are On Board

With mere hours to go until what will almost definitely be a highly charged, record-breaking Election Day, social media is awash with last-minute activism and nonpartisan pleas to vote. The fraught political climate seems to have seeped into every little nook and cranny of the internet, even sparking its very own Instagram beauty trend: election-centric nail art. These celebrity manicures are one more reminder to vote.Generation Z Instagrammers and TikTokers will reportedly make up a tenth of voters this year, and their keenness to cast a ballot has been increasingly apparent over the past few months. Pop culture icons — the virtual ringleaders of 2020's young voter demographic — have been fueling the enthusiasm with politically relevant sartorial statements, one of the most prominent being Lizzo's election-inspired outfit at October's Billboard Music Awards. Before the rapper posted a video of herself dropping off her mail-in ballot in an American flag-adorned bustier, she accepted her golden microphone in an election-inspired dress and nail duo. Now, the theme dominates the grids of manicurists like Mei Kawajiri (aka Nails by Mei) and Betina Goldstein, and has enticed other celebrities like Olivia Munn, Gabrielle Union, and Kerry Washington to flaunt their own "vote nails" in solidarity. LizzoTwo weeks ahead of the November 3 election, Lizzo turned up at the Billboard Music Awards fully adorned in the word "vote." She even launched a voting campaign of her own dubbed LIZZOBEVOTING. Manitoba man used Snapchat to meet and sexually assault teen: police

WINNIPEG -- The Manitoba RCMP said a 61-year-old suspect used Snapchat as a means of meeting a teenager, who was then sexually assaulted. Mounties said in November 2019, a teenage boy, who is under the age of 16, reported he was sexually assaulted by a man he met on Snapchat. Police noted the teen agreed to meet with the man, because he pretended to be a high school student on the app. Officers allege when the two met, the teen was sexually assaulted. RCMP officers, including investigators from the Internet Child Exploitation Team, investigated the incident, and were able to access information from social media platforms. Police were able to gather enough evidence to arrest a suspect. On Oct. 29, officers arrested Dana Dadson, from Flin Flon, Man., and Bakers Narrows, Man., for child sexual assault, as well as a number of other charges related to interactions with an underage person. None of these charges have been proven in court. At this time, police said they learned of another alleged victim, who is also a teenage boy under the age of 16. Officers continue to investigate and are worried there are other victims, noting the suspect not only used Snapchat, but other websites as well. Police said he is known to use an alias when he communicates with teens. Mounties ask anyone with information to call them at 204-687-1423 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

For Better Privacy, Use These Apps Instead of WhatsApp's New Disappearing Messages

WhatsApp’s long-awaited disappearing messages feature will roll out for all users soon, but you should make sure you’re comfortable with how the feature works before using it.Disappearing messages add an extra layer of privacy to your conversations. Let’s say you want to let someone know your home address, but don’t want that information forever accessible in your chat history. Send the address as a disappearing message and it will self-delete itself after a set amount of time. The appeal of disappearing messages is obvious, but it seems like WhatsApp’s disappearing messages will be less secure than similar features found in other apps.Based on the company’s explanation for how the feature will work on its platform, disappearing messages will stick around for seven days. You can’t edit that window, which may frustrate users hoping for customizable self-delete times—something many other messaging apps include.Seven days is a long time for potentially sensitive information to be sitting in a message thread. Worse, these messages are potentially accessible even after those seven days are up if:G/O Media may get a commissionThe message preview is still displayed from a device’s notification screenThe message is quoted/replied to.The message is forwarded to other chat threads or groups. The receiver takes a screenshot before it’s deleted.Media sent through disappearing messages will also be saved permanently and needs to be manually deleted if you want to remove it.Apps with better disappearing messages than WhatsAppTo be fair, disappearing messages can be compromised in other apps, including Signal, but it’s harder to do so, and few are impacted by WhatsApp loopholes listed above. As long as you know how WhatsApp’s disappearing messages work and use them appropriately, the feature is entirely fine. Still, WhatsApp’s disappearing messages are not as secure as similar features in other apps. You should seek out an alternative if…
