YouTube and Vimeo censor new documentary Antifa: Rise of the Black Flags

Antifa, a far left-wing organization active in the US, that many refer to as extremist and militant, is among the topics that are not to be questioned or criticized on YouTube, but also on another, smaller video site, Vimeo. That’s judging by the fact that a new documentary, entitled, Antifa: Rise of the Black flags, published by Citizen Journalism Network, was removed from both platforms soon after it was uploaded on Saturday – even though a trailer was still available on YouTube. The reason given by Vimeo, considered by some as less prone to censorships and restrictions, but also less influential than YouTube, is that its users are not allowed to upload videos that show “extreme violence.” Double your web browsing speed with today's sponsor. Get Brave. Judging by the reports, YouTube is yet to explain the reasoning behind its decision to remove the video but the reason given on the video page is that the video was… “too long.” The documentary is around one hour long. real-time look at youtube saying “antifa: rise of the black flags” is just “too long” pic.twitter.com/Q5kP5oSuoQ — Gina A. 🤷‍♀️ (@hellogines) November 1, 2020 Mirrors of the video have so far been able to remain on the platform. It would be hard if not impossible to make a documentary about a group routinely involved in protests that tend to turn into violence and incidents without including depicting violence, but in addition to that, the film’s creator journalist and commentator Jack Posobiec says that no “extreme violence” was shown anyway, and that the reason given is merely an excuse to remove the video and hide this information from US public days ahead of the presidential election, in that way interfering with it. The documentary looks at Antifa’s rise in the wake of Donald Trump’s…

The Sound Design of 'Toy Story' is All About Balance

Home Columns Movies Meg Shields November 2, 2020Listen up: when you're building a world from the perspective of toys, sound design is critical. Welcome to The Queue — your daily distraction of curated video content sourced from across the web. Today, we’re watching an exploration of the sound design of Pixar’s Toy Story. The Academy Awards for Best Sound Design and Best Sound Mixing have long been a confusing part of the Oscars ceremony. What’s the difference between the two categories? Not a lot of viewers knew. Bluntly put: a sound mixer is in charge of how you hear a film; a sound editor is in charge of what you hear in a film. But you’d be forgiven for not being able to suss out the difference for yourself. There’s an un-said trend that “good” sound design and mixing should immerse you to the point that it goes unnoticed. This can make it difficult to tell design and mixing apart. More importantly, it can obfuscate the films that take a more expressionistic and creative approach to sound-based storytelling. For a great example of a film that foregrounds sound, we can look at Pixar‘s first feature film, Toy Story. As designed by Gary Rydstrom, the 1995 animated feature’s use of sound endows a sense of personality into each and every character, setting, and isolated emotional moment without distracting us from the dialogue or the core of the film’s narrative. Moreover, as the video essay below underlines, the Toy Story sound design (which was not nominated in either sound Oscar category) is so successful because it’s a balancing act: between the exaggerated and the realistic; between the small and the gargantuan; and between the literal and the subjective. Sound in Toy Story impresses a sense of scale that puts us in the cowboy boots of our…

Instituto Cervantes and Festival de Sevilla, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, will present “New Cinephilias Online” through the Instituto Cervantes channel on the Vimeo platform. The films will be freely accessible for 48 hours from their start date and time. A new film will be shown every Saturday starting Nov. 7. The films to be shown are Adrián Orr’s documentary Niñato (Kid), which was named Best Film during the 19th BAFICI – Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival); the drama feature films Ver a una mujer (To See a Woman) by Mònica Rovira and A estación violenta (The Wild Season) by Anxos Fazáns; and Xavier Artigas and Xapo Ortega’s documentary Idrissa, crònica d´una mort qualsevol (Idrissa, Chronicle of an Ordinary Death), which was nominated to the XII Premios Gaudí (Guadí Awards) and the 15th Festival de Sevilla de cine europeo (Seville European Film Festival). “These films are creations of filmmakers who sought to express themselves with new paradigms and who benefited from the freedom offered by the digital revolution,” a release from the Insituto Cervantes says. “During the last 20 years, these artists have created a niche where they experiment with new narrative models. There is no doubt that, with them, new viewers are born who appreciate and look forward to seeing the fruits of their labors: the modes of postmodernity, the visual quality, the formal audacity and the multiple representations of these films are some of the features they share and…

Dirt's First Podcast Takes on YouTuber Mansions

The arrival of social media has changed the very nature of celebrity; today, believe it our not, Instagram and Tik Tok clout is the highest form of advertising currency. Young consumers have always tended to distrust major corporations, but it’s only recently that marketers have pivoted to target the all-important Gen-Z and millennial demographics through members of their own tribes. With an infinite array of lucrative brand deals and sponsorships available, and no shortage of other income streams (merch, music, tours), savvy young digital content creators with big social followings can afford to live it up in ways yesterday’s rockstars could never imagine. We’ve seen that phenomenon impact Dirt’s traffic, too. In our list of all-time most popular stories, seven of the top 10 discuss the real estate purchases of homegrown superstars, not traditional mass-market celebrities. Turns out Emma Chamberlain, Jeffree Star, James Charles, Joe Rogan, and David Dobrik all have more rabid fanbases than all the more traditional “A-list” names, at least if the eye-popping click-through rates are to be believed. So when discussing what topics to cover for our very first video/podcast episode, we both agreed that the bonkers homes of YouTube’s rich and famous couldn’t be ignored. Through everything from coffee companies and cosmetics, to podcasts and apparel, these young creatirs have demonstrated that when it comes to their earnings, the sky is clearly not the limit — outer space, possibly. Now live on YouTube, here’s a peek at Dirt editors James McClain and Mae Hamilton gawking, and occasionally dissecting, a handful of the snazziest creator mansions. Look for the episode to soon be available for streaming on Spotify, too — that is, if these influencers don’t sell their “starter” mansions and move to bigger ones before next week.
