Netflix steals from TikTok. Instagram steals from Snapchat. Facebook and LinkedIn steal from everyone. Why is this all okay?Photo: Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto/Getty ImagesIn early March, Netflix launched a new feature called Fast Laughs, which let users scroll through vertical videos of short clips from the company’s comedy specials and shows. The streaming giant pitched it as a new way for users to browse shows, but some immediately pegged it as something else: a TikTok clone for branded content. It’s yet another sign that TikTok’s format is so successful that there’s nothing left for competitors to do but copy it.For newer social media apps, getting copied by a competitor represents both a best- and worst-case scenario. On the one hand, it’s evidence that their approach is working — on the other, it means competitors can wipe out their advantage with minimal effort.Imagine a world where only one operating system was allowed to use a mouse, or only one phone could use pinch-to-zoom.Netflix is hardly the first to copy TikTok’s UI design. Instagram cloned TikTok wholesale with Reels. Snapchat also added a TikTok-style music feature to compete in the short-form audio space. Ironically, Snapchat itself is also subject of a mass-copying spree, with…

Who would have thought that there would be a social media app which lets you enter a chat room as a virtual crab called Crabhouse? And who would have thought that it would be made to change its name to Crabhome after it sounded “too similar” to the audio-chat app Clubhouse? Crabhouse—an app that is only about a month old—was created by Japanese developer Ryota Ikegai. However, according to Japan Today it has already gotten over 150,000 downloads and nearly 2,000 five-star reviews on the App Store.  Crabhouse is a quirky social media app which lets you come in a virtual “house” as a little crab. Other people as little crabs would also be in the same house, and you’re able to read that other crabs are saying by tapping on the crabs. The app might be totally different from the invite-only audio-chat platform Clubhouse, and it seems like a harmless play on words. But Apple didn’t see it that way. 【HELP！】

Chinese users of the instant messenger Signal knew that the good times wouldn’t last long. The app, which is used for encrypted conversations, is unavailable in mainland China as of the morning of March 16, a test by TechCrunch shows. The website of the app has been banned in mainland China since March 15, according to censorship-tracking website Greatfire.org. Signal could not be immediately reached for comment. The encrypted chat app was one of the few Western social networks that remained accessible in China without the use of a virtual private network. The likes of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have long been blocked. In some way, a ban is a badge of honor, signifying a foreign app has reached a substantial user base in China that catches the attention of local authorities. Signal is still available for download on Apple’s China App Store as of March 16, an indication that Apple hasn’t received a government order to remove the app, which is gradually gaining ground among China’s tech-savvy, privacy-conscious users.  » Read More
