Can WhatsApp kill Snapchat with THIS feature?

Whatsapp Currently, WhatsApp is giving a time duration of seven days for the disappearing messages which basically means users cannot set a custom time for the messages to vanish. Once the feature is enabled, messages sent going forward will automatically vanish for both parties after seven days.  Popular messaging platform WhatsApp has been working on the ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature for quite some time now. The Facebook-owned giant has now finally started rolling out the feature for users in India. The feature is available on both Android as well as iOS.  Similar to Snapchat, users will be able to decide the duration of the message, after which it will be deleted from the chat. As per the WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has been testing the ability to set messages to disappear after 24 hours which was earlier under development. This feature is available on both individual and group chats. While for one-to-one chats any person can enable the feature, group chats would need the admins to do the deed.  Currently, WhatsApp is giving a time duration of seven days for the disappearing messages which basically means users cannot set a custom time for the messages to vanish. Once the feature is enabled, messages…

Former Quibi Execs Join Roku to Ahead of Shortform Library's Launch

5:39 PM PST 3/11/2021 by Natalie Jarvey Courtesy of Roku Former Quibi senior content executives Colin Davis and Brian Tannenbaum are among those who have joined Roku. Two months after acquiring the Quibi library, Roku has tapped a handful of the defunct mobile app's former executives to manage the rollout of that programming on its platform. Two former senior content executives at Quibi, Colin Davis and Brian Tannenbaum, have updated their LinkedIn profiles to indicate their new roles at Roku. Former Quibi business affairs executive Ryan Bocskay has also indicated via the social network that he recently started a job at Roku. It's unclear how many other Quibi employees have joined the streaming media company. "Quibi built a talented team to support the development of really fantastic programming," a Roku spokesman said in a statement. "We were thrilled to welcome a number of them to the Roku team in recent weeks and their deep expertise will help ensure the successful launch and growth of the Quibi content on The Roku Channel." Quibi launched in April 2020, offering highly produced shortform video programming designed for mobile devices. But the company, led by CEO Meg Whitman and chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, struggled to…

Vimeo's Section 230 Win in Pastor's Discrimination Suit Affirmed by Appeals Court

March 11, 2021 4:32pm PT by Ashley Cullins MARTIN BUREAU/AFP via Getty Images Vimeo was entitled to delete the account of a pastor who posted videos about sexual orientation change efforts, according to a federal appeals court, which affirmed a decision that the video-sharing site is protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. James Domen and Church United in June 2019 sued video-sharing site Vimeo for allegedly censoring and discriminating against him based on his "preferred" sexual orientation and religious beliefs. The pastor, who says he identifies as a "former homosexual," posted a series of videos in an effort to challenge a California Assembly bill that would have expanded laws that ban sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE). Vimeo sent a warning letter, explaining that it doesn't allow videos that promote SOCE, and threatening to delete the videos or the entire Church United account if Domen didn't remove the offending content. U.S. District Judge Stewart D. Aaron in January dismissed the suit, finding Section 230 gave Vimeo immunity from such a suit because it restricted the content in good faith. On Thursday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit agreed and affirmed the decision. While there's been…

Black creativity and community made Clubhouse the destination it is

Illustration: Davide Barco for LEVELOver the past few months, the popularity of Clubhouse, the invite-only, live-audio app, has reached a fever pitch, exploding to 2 million users and reaching a $1 billion valuation in January. The social media platform has proven to be a thriving microcosm for a certain set of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and celebrity influencers, like Elon Musk. But long before Musk arrived on the scene, as Keith Nelson Jr writes in LEVEL, Black power and influence was at work and held an outsized role in getting Clubhouse off the ground. “Clubhouse is just the newest game in a sport that Black people have long dominated while simultaneously having their contributions ignored or stolen: social media,” Nelson argues. While the social-chat platform has “spurred Black unity” and created a space that encourages a certain level of candor (room-recording is not allowed), it has also “open the doors for racist and sexist speech and behavior to ferment virtually unchecked,” Nelson writes.  » Read More

Federal Privacy Bill Garners Support From Network Advertising Initiative, Other Business Groups

by Wendy Davis , Staff Writer @wendyndavis, Yesterday A federal privacy bill introduced this week by Rep. Suzan DelBene, a Democrat from Washington state who previously worked for Microsoft, appears to be garnering support from business groups.DelBene's “Information Transparency and Personal Data Control Act” would require companies to obtain consumers' opt-in consent before sharing or selling “sensitive” data, and allow consumers to opt out of the collection and sharing or selling of non-sensitive data. The bill's definition of “sensitive” includes people's web browsing history and app use, unless the data is aggregated. But the requirement that companies obtain opt-in consent before sharing or selling that data has some loopholes -- including one that applies when companies disclose how they plan to use the information. The bill would override many state privacy laws, including broad measures in California and Virginia. But the measure wouldn't trump state laws dealing with biometric privacy, data-breach notifications and wiretapping.advertisementadvertisementDelBene's bill also wouldn't empower consumers to bring private lawsuits over violations. She stated this week that a federal privacy law is needed in order to “establish a uniform set of rights for consumers and create one set of rules for businesses.”The ad industry's Network Advertising Initiative, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,…

Byeong Hun An roasts himself on Twitter after making an 11 on 17th hole at Players Championship

The first round of the Players Championship has been a very wet one already as we’ve seen a ton of tee shots on the legendary par-3 17th hole land in the water. We told you earlier about Kevn Na’s disaster of a time on that hole in which he chipped in for an 8 after hitting three shots in the water. He later withdrew from the tournament with a back injury.Well, a little later in the day Byeong Hun An walked over to the 17 tee and made Na’s 8 look like nothing. An hit four balls in the water and ended up with an 11, which is the second-highest score to ever be recorded on the island hole (during the Players Championship, I’m sure amateurs who have played the course have fared worse). An had the perfect tweet after his round, though, as he was able to make fun of himself a bit.Players Championship: Leaderboard | PhotosAn then made double-bogey on the 18th hole, meaning he needed 17 strokes to play the final two holes. He finished his round at 11 over.

Someone Totally Ruined the Memory of PalmOS By Putting Twitter on It

PalmOS devices may look incredibly antiquated now, but the PalmPilot and Handspring Visor had one major advantage over modern smartphones: They didn’t have a Twitter app. Unfortunately, Jorge Cohen has just changed that with a PalmOS Twitter app that brings doomscrolling to these 24-year-old devices. The original PalmPilot was released by U.S. Robotics in March of 1997, nine years before Twitter revolutionized how we share opinions online and terrorize those that disagree with them. The PalmPilot and other PDAs that would would follow in its footsteps, including the Handspring Visor, were primarily designed as productivity tools, making schedules and email available while you were away from your computer, even before the BlackBerry hit the scene to stretch the work day well past quitting time.Cohen’s PalmOS Twitter app comes decades after most of us tossed our PalmOS devices in a drawer to be forgotten, but while it’s a work in progress, even the version they demonstrated on Twitter yesterday looks better than what we’re currently stuck with on iOS and Android. As Cohen later explains, their PalmOS Twitter app currently lacks the ability to like tweets, or even the ability to post new tweets, which actually sounds like a solid upgrade. It also…
