Nielsen Digital Ad Ratings Begin to Roll Out for YouTube CTV

YouTube and Nielsen roll out new ad measurements as YouTube CTV viewership continues to increase. Here's what you need to know.In 2020, more people than ever streamed YouTube on connected TVs (CTV).This is driven in part by people spending more time at home, resulting in more folks choosing to watch YouTube primarily on the TV screen. In December 2020, a quarter of logged-in YouTube CTV viewers watched content almost exclusively (more than 90%) on the TV screen, according to internal YouTube data. Moreover, Google’s early studies have shown that YouTube CTV campaigns are driving incremental viewership across linear TV, desktop and mobile devices. After leveraging YouTube CTV for a recent campaign, Christina Seidner, Senior Brand Manager, Kimberly-Clark, noted:“We believed YouTube CTV would boost our Pull-Ups campaign in a cost-effective way as our customers continue to shift attention from traditional TV to streaming platforms. What we found is that what’s true about YouTube overall is true about YouTube CTV – it delivers unique reach to TV.”The growing viewership of CTV creates a new opportunity for advertisers. However, understandably, many advertisers have hesitations around advertising on CTV due to difficulties in measurement and attribution.YouTube has acknowledged the importance of measurement across CTV and, as a result,…

Evan Spiegel on the Future of Snapchat–and All of Social Media

Bicycles scared people when they were first introduced, says Evan Spiegel. The lesson? Don't be too quick to dismiss the usefulness of emerging technologies. Spiegel, the CEO and co-founder of Snap, discussed the future of his company's best-known product and the broader social media landscape at Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Summit on Tuesday. Snapchat has 265 million daily active users who send 5 billion snaps per day, but the company has expanded well beyond disappearing messages into new features like an interactive map, augmented and virtual reality, and a TikTok-like offering called Spotlight. Here are the tech innovations he expects will shape the social media industry and how we interact with Snapchat and other platforms in the future.Augmented realitySnap introduced augmented reality glasses called Spectacles in 2016, but it didn't go well. Today, Spiegel says he sees untapped potential in augmented reality using just a smartphone. For example, users can try on products and buy them within social apps, increasing conversions and "transforming shopping into more of an experience, which hasn't really been possible online historically," he says.AR could also be "transformative" for education, Spiegel says. It could make it easier, for instance, to learn about how the human body works--a big improvement over the trip to the morgue Spiegel remembers from his school days. PrivacyApple's new privacy policy, which requires…

“It's Kind of Scary to Think About Letting Anyone and Everyone Into the Edit Bay”: Jethika Director …

Drawing from the world of gaming, writer/director Pete Ohs is embarking on a post-production experiment for his pandemic-shot film, Jethika: live-streaming his edit. “I know that YouTube is overflowing with editing and software tutorials but I’ve never heard of anyone actually editing a movie live,” he writes in an email, and I can’t think of anyone who has done this either. Beginning this week, Ohs is using Twitch to transmit his editing screen as well as webcam footage of himself behind the console, allowing viewers to track his process cut-by-cut. “I imagine the audience for this stream is going to be extremely niche but I feel like it could be really interesting for certain filmmakers, particularly those earlier in their careers who haven’t had the chance to sit in on many edit, he writes. “I know I’m always curious to gain insights into other’s creative processes.” Indeed, Ohs’s generous experiment will undoubtedly prove useful to young filmmakers and editors. I tuned in for a few moments to watch Ohs cut a scene bouncing from a car traveling down a highway to a guy stranded at the side of the road. Asked a viewer in the chat, “How do you slide the…
