What Brands Need To Consider As They Look Beyond Facebook

Ross Shelleman is the CEO of Aisle Rocket, a full-service performance marketing and creative services agency.   getty Facebook’s overwhelming dominance in the social advertising space has been well established for years now. But as demographics and media behaviors shift and Facebook continues to come under scrutiny for its practices, brands and agencies are beginning to question the platform’s dominant position within their digital media budgets.  Without a doubt, Facebook continues to deliver the targeting at scale on which many marketers have come to rely. But as marketers look to future-proof their strategies for the years to come, they’re realizing that diversification beyond Facebook and onto other growing social platforms makes infinite sense. Slower internet bothering you? New Instagram Lite with just 2MB runs on 2G networks

JERUSALEM: Facebook said on Wednesday it was launching a "lite" version of Instagram in 170 countries that will enable people with poor internet to access the photo and video sharing social networking service. Instagram Lite will be available for Android-based phones and require less bandwidth than the traditional version. The app itself requires just 2 megabytes (MB) - versus 30 MB for Instagram - and runs even on slower 2G networks, allowing customers in parts of India, Africa, Asia and Latin America with older internet infrastructure to access the service. "These are the markets where there is the greatest need," said Tzach Hadar, director of product management at Facebook in Tel Aviv, where the app was largely developed. "It uses a lot less data so if you have a small data package you are not going to run out when you use the service. But the aim is for us to give the same breadth of experience you get on Instagram," he told Reuters. Hadar, who heads Facebook's R&D in Israel, said 170 countries did not represent a full global launch, but "it's a step on the way." He noted that other than TV and reels - for creating and…

Two in five women (43 per cent) globally have left or considered leaving the workforce during the pandemic, and over a quarter (26 per cent) say their employer has offered no support. Furthermore, LinkedIn data finds that on average women globally applied to 11 per cent fewer jobs than men last year, and that women’s hiring has proven to be more vulnerable. Instagram Is Experimenting With Automated Captions for Stories

If you follow a lot of influencers on Instagram, you will know that they upload a lot of content updating you about some things on their stories and at times it can be hard to sit and listen to all of it. Also sometimes because of language barrier and accent differences people do not understand a few words that are being said on the stories. So what some influencers do is they write down wat they have said in each story in the form of a caption to make it easier for them to get their point through.Well, if you are an influencer who does this or just someone who is very active on their stories we have got some great news for you. Instagram in September last year introduced an automated caption for the IGTV video and now the social network is testing the same for their stories format.Instagram is currently working towards launching a “closed caption” sticker for their stories which will show automated captions on each of your story with a writing in text about whatever you are saying and this will be available in four different formats.Matt Navarra who is a social media apps researcher, took…

Myanmar's state-run enterprises shunned by global tech firms

Major global tech firms have stepped up to reexamine the use of their platforms by military-owned companies including state telco Mytel and television network MRTV, but activists argue that only “stance and action” could prevent the situation from worsening. Vimeo, a US video streaming site, said on Thursday that it is reviewing a channel owned by the Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV), according to a Reuters report. The broadcaster which has served as the government’s mouthpiece since the coup, published its first video on the channel on March 7. As of publication, the account was still active on Vimeo’s platform, with a total of 161 short daily news videos. While Vimeo did not respond immediately to KrASIA’s request for comment, a spokeswoman told Reuters that the video is under review by its trust and safety team, and that it will only be pulled if it violates the content guidelines or causes harm. At least 60 people have been killed, and 2,008 arrested, charged, or sentenced during weeks of violent crackdown following the February 1 coup, according to data published on Wednesday by local human rights group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). On Friday, YouTube took down MRTV together with…

From a 'big pile of stones' to an award-winning Scots monument – Clachtoll Broch is rescue project …

It is one of northern Scotland’s most iconic archaeological monuments that provides a unique insight into the nation’s Iron Age past having emerged after a 14 year series of community excavations. Some 2,000 years ago, a Highland broch burned down but in the process sealed remarkable evidence of its final occupation inside. The Clachtoll Broch amidst the remote community of Assynt has been transformed from a neglected ruin to a fascinating window into life in the area at around 50AD. Now it has been named Rescue Project of the Year in the prestigious UK-wide Current Archaeology Magazine Annual Awards. Projects are nominated for awards by magazine staff, which are then decided by a public vote. Archaeologists investigating the remains of the Iron Age drystone hollow-walled structure say they have found evidence to support the theory that the building caught fire and collapsed about 2,000 years ago. Its interior has been effectively untouched ever since, but, with the sea encroaching, the ruin has been becoming increasingly fragile and dangerous to visitors. So Historic Assynt, a local community organisation organised a project to conserve and consolidate the monument. Despite its massive and enduring appearance, the broch has been actively decaying, mainly through…
