Words by Sarah LoganGraphic by Aspasia Celia TsampasThe COVID-19 pandemic has left many students at City College feeling left out of the activities that once brought them joy and socialization before remote classes. With large gatherings being banned because of the lockdown, theater goers, performers, and actors have had to improvise. One group has come up with new ways to practice what they enjoy most— performing. The actors and actresses at City College will be producing a virtual theater production this upcoming season. The City College theater department will be virtually performing three plays between the months of March to May. These productions include Anna in the Tropics, written by Nilo Cruz, Levelling Up, written by Deborah Zoe Laufer, and The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde. The City College theater department’s most recent completed virtual production was Dog Sees God, written by Bert V. Royal and directed by Josie Harding, an actress from City College. It was debuted on VIMEO, featuring a City College student cast from February 11th to February 13th. Anna in the Tropics, directed by Julio Mongo, will be premiering from March 11th to March 13th. Levelling Up, directed by student Jared Martino, will…

Posts circulating widely on Facebook in Nigeria claim that the Nigerian government has purchased the instant messaging service WhatsApp for 3 billion naira ($7.3 million) and plans to use it to spy on citizens. A post shared nearly 600 times on Facebook here and here claims that the Nigerian government purchased WhatsApp to spy on Nigerian citizens. The post originated on a Facebook account that supports the secession of Biafra from Nigeria -- a movement led by Nnamdi Kanu. “You will be tracked! Leave WhatsApp now! Go to Signal app now!” reads an excerpt from the post. Signal is an end-to-end encrypted instant messaging app. A screenshot of the false post, taken on March 10, 2021 Facebook says rumours are false WhatsApp was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, former employees of Yahoo, in 2009. The mobile application initially launched on iPhones, and was then developed for Blackberry and Android devices. Among all the App Store apps, Instagram was discovered to be sharing people’s sensitive information. The latest Apple privacy labels have been examined by pCloud which is a cloud storage network. The firm analyzes the Data used to trace users, advertisements owned by the third party, and advertising and marketing strategies of the developers. STR/The Associated Press The UN Security Council agreed on Wednesday to condemn violence against Myanmar protesters and call on the army to show restraint, but China and Russia helped block language denouncing the military takeover as a coup and threatening further action. Firing tear gas and rubber bullets, Myanmar security forces trapped hundreds of anti-junta protesters late into the night in two districts of Yangon on Wednesday, prompting the U.S. Embassy to call for the forces to withdraw. Some protesters who managed to evade blockades set up by police in surrounding streets told of scores of arrests and said that some of those who got caught were beaten. More than 60 protesters have been killed and some 2,000 people have been detained by security forces since the Feb. 1 coup against elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners advocacy group said. A junta spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. The military has brushed off condemnation of its actions, as it has in past periods of army rule when outbreaks of protest were forcibly repressed. State television…

Read moreDetailsIn today’s era of confinement and confusion, it’s fitting that one of the most memorable performances of the year was given by a pair of sitting U.S. congresswomen attempting to destroy each other on board an alien spaceship. No other quarantine moment so effortlessly bridged generations and perspectives as when representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, and Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota, joined the streaming platform Twitch in October to play Among Us, the low-fi space-themed multiplayer game that has soared to popularity during the pandemic.Conceived by Ocasio-Cortez as an impromptu Generation Z voter initiative, the online event ended up being an only-in-2020 slice of high-camp theater. Watching Ocasio-Cortez’s pink AOC astronaut avatar engage in two-dimensional intergalactic carnage while a live video showed the headphone-clad congresswoman dispensing wisecracks (“What kind of futuristic spaceship still runs a combustion engine?”) between musings on health care and the presidential race was a remarkable reminder that livestreaming sites such as Twitch are now some of the most exciting stages on which to witness the zeitgeist unfold. There was even a rare moment of bipartisanship: At one point, Ocasio-Cortez broadcast that Justin Amash, the former Republican representative from Michigan, had just texted her to…
Read moreDetailsFacebook is beginning the roll out of Instagram Lite – a lighter, faster product designed for low-speed internet connections and lower-end smartphones – in 170 countries this week, including Israel, with plans for a global launch in the near future.Like Facebook Lite over five years ago, Instagram Lite was developed by a team of engineers, designers, and product managers among hundreds of employees at Facebook’s R&D hub in Tel Aviv, the largest such center outside the US. The work was done in collaboration with a New York-based team including Instagram engineering, product, design, and research.Instagram Lite weighs less than 2MB, allowing for quick installation and load time, and low storage consumption. It will offer the core features of the app including the feed, stories, filters, direct messaging, and some IGTV capabilities. Instagram Lite will allow for the Instagram experience to remain fast and reliable irrespective of the device, platform, and network, the company says.To do this, much of the code actually runs on Facebook’s servers rather than the users’ devices to save on space and processing (like Facebook Lite). The target audience for the app is also the same as for Facebook Lite: hundreds of millions of mobile users in emerging markets…
